Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 66.5/100, a mean average of 63.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 63.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.4.

This album is sort of an albatross around my neck when it comes to my musical tastes. It's my favorite album of all time, one I've listened to an embarrassing number of times. And yet it's generally seen as a well-produced, melodic, at-one-time-popular, but ultimately mundane album. It's something that entered, briefly lingered, and then escaped the public consciousness. But I find it addictive and powerful in a way that is beyond my ability to fully justify. I feel slightly less terrible that my mother - who was a music major and a professional vocalist for many years - also loves the album inordinately after I reintroduced it to her.

This sometimes sounds like "sammy hagar lite" to me. In a world of pop/rock, it has just enough of a rock edge. Plus, there's a taste of 89's flair for horns. (Track i remember from '89: music is "the doctor"!)
