Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Recently bought the vinyl reissue on Gnome Life after listening to it for a while on a poorly-ripped mp3 copy I downloaded from the 'net. And it sounds absolutely gorgeous. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to appreciate the beauty and emotions that leaps off Basho's guitar strings, and even if his vocal talent leaves something to be desired (think like a gruff Antony from Antony & The Johnsons after smoking 40 Rothmans) the rawness fits the music perfectly. One of my favourite BEA finds - kudos to Meccalecca for helping bring Basho's wonderful music into my life.
