First listen as a whole in many a year and it's held up rather well. Was never a big fan other than the singles. But it has lovely production, quite atmospheric. They definately were indebted to the Roses and they had the feminine side to things like the Roses debut, and some of their chops too. I like this a lot more than I did. They didn't quite fit the blokey times I suppose. Edit: the atmosphere of this record really reminded me so much of in ribbons by pale saints (a fave) that I checked out who produced this, and it's the same guy, Hugh Jones.
@Charicature You probably just heard "Slight Return" back in the day. It got loads of radio play in the UK.

Very reminiscent of Manic Street Preachers. Not bad at all - but one thing is bugging me - that song "Slight Return" - I've heard a song almost exactly like it somewhere, but I can't place it.
It certainly is a great debut! The follow up is also consistent and worth checking out too

For all the talk of Oasis inheriting the Stone Roses mantle, this album comes closest to the intricate musicianship and skill that was the roses true defining feature... a finely crafted work that has appreciated in value as time has passed. Thought to be just one of a crowd of albums of high but short lived popularity at the time, only at a distance of some years, when it's contemporary works have faded from view, can it's brilliance be understood.
