Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 80.8/100, a mean average of 79.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.9.

Wonderful debut album by Belle & Sebastian, it has a little influence from a couple of other favourite debuts of mine - Velvet Underground & Nico and The Smiths.

A very well-written record. Quite spare and simple musically speaking, it works because it gives the vocals more of a spotlight, since it's the lyrics that are the all-important factor here . the vocals are pretty as well in their own unique way.

Che bellezza e che delicatezza aveva questo esordio dei Belle and Sebastian, pur ancora grezzo e fragile al confronto del loro terzo e perfetto disco.

Debut album from one Britain's greatest bands. Belle and Sebastian write lovely songs with beautiful melodies and great lyrics. Tigermilk, is the first of many fine records by this great band. The state I am in, my wandering days are over, and, we rule the school, are just three standouts on an album full of them. Not B&S's best, but still great.

I don't think I'll ever again like this album as much as I did 15 years ago, and I'll certainly never get any deeper into B&S, but I wouldn't complain if someone threw this on as background music.

While I don't like the mellow acoustic style of bands like Belle and Sebastian all that much, I can appreciate If You're Feeling Sinister to a certain extent. Tigermilk still has the fantastic lyrics that Belle and Sebastian have no problem bringing to the table, but it honestly is just too laid back for me. I could easily fall asleep to this nightly. I don't mean that pejoratively, it's just a bit too relaxing for me. Honestly, though, if they had released Sinister and Tigermilk as a double LP with a different arrangement of songs, it might have made for a fantastic experience. Belle and Sebastian are incredibly consistent, I can admit that.
