This was officially released under the name Giant Giant Sand, allegedly to account for the unusual size of the current backing band, complete with horns. The album is also self-identified as a country rock opera, and I'd say that's apt. It is a sprawling desert epic. It's hard not to compare this record to one of my all-time favorites, Terry Allen's Juarez. And though nothing can top that album's border-gothic charm, Tucson fares well in the comparison.
