A work of utter genius. This album always seemed to me to be an extremely determined Curtis attempting to prove to the world that he was more than just a great pop songwriter (which he certainly was, and The Impressions are probably my favourite singles band of all-time), but also a Curtis overcome by both anger at the way society worked, and total and irrefutable faith in humanity to do right in the end. Honestly, this album is just perfect from start to finish, filled to the brim with stunning and sincere lyrics and even more impressive musicianship and composing. My favourite soul album. (Edited)

Move On Up is seriously one of my favourite songs ever. The horn-line is incredible. Type of song that just makes you wanna move around and do something. You can't sit down or relax while listening to it. It's impossible. (Edited)

Incredible reporting on the world as seen from one black man's perspective, that transcended and opened the eyes of many in thw white establishment. A Peerless album - one of the best of all time. (Edited)

The debut solo album from Mayfield continuing his social commentary on black America that he started with the Impressions. The sound is funkier than that of The Impressions but the song titles say it all - If There's a Hell Below We're All Gonna Go, Miss Black America & We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue. The best track however is Move On Up an edited version of which was a big hit in the U.K. (Edited)
