Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.6/100, a mean average of 69.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 9.8.

As Kingturtle noted, actually a 1959 Cecil Taylor session. United Artists insisted that Coltrane and trumpeter Kenny Dorham perform on it. Taylor was content with Trane, but otherwise wanted to choose his own sidemen. He didn't want Dorham and Dorham reportedly intensely disliked Taylor's avant-garde playing. So a tense date that doesn't jell. In addition to Dorham and Taylor's clashing styles, it probably also would've been better if Trane had worked with Taylor a few years later during Trane's Impulse period, when his playing was less hard-bop oriented (as great as that was). The rare album Trane appears on that doesn't work.

Note: This was originally released in 1959 as Cecil Taylor Quintet's LP called Stereo Drive. In 1963 it was rereleased as Coltrane Time to capitalize on his success.
