Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 4% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.8/100, a mean average of 78.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.4.

Ditto Onater's comment. This might be the most stressful album I've ever listened to. It's heavier than metal, freer than most free jazz, and more frantic than serialism or atonalism.
While I'm not sure if this was the intent, it's almost as if this is a set of frenetic last breaths by someone who knew he was dying and realized he had so much left to accomplish, and so much fear that the days were his last. That may be a bit melodramatic considering Coltrane was playing free jazz for at least 2 years prior, but this is jazz at its freest.
This is one of the most challenging albums I've ever heard, but I think it's worth listening to as a portrait of the last few months of Coltrane's life.
3.5/5. It was insane, and I'm glad I listened to it, but I honestly don't know if I'll be able to bring myself to listen to it again for a while. Also note that my rating scale might be slightly harsher than most. If it's above 2.5/5, it means I liked the album, above 3/5 means I thought it was good, 4/5 means I thought it was great, so this is somewhere between good and great I suppose.

This thing is heavier than any death metal album ever.
