Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.0/100, a mean average of 77.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 10.4.

The mid-60s were such a great time for jazz. There was a split between the free jazz noisy stuff of Ayler, late Coltrane, etc, and the melodic, funky soul jazz like Lee Morgan and Jimmy Smith. The Schizophrenia of the title refers to being pulled in both of those directions at once. To be honest Miles kind of loses me with Bitches Brew; he went pretty far in the "free" direction, really. I like more what Herbie and Wayne Shorter and Larry Young and other guys did in keeping things more grounded rhythmically while still being able to extend themselves and explore. This album is in that area--straightforward jazz for sure, and never noisy, but they're not just jamming changes. There's a little flute that gets played by James Spaulding, and jazz flute isn't always received that well these days, compared to the 60s. But his tone is pretty mellow, and his soloing is on point. There are really no barriers to entry for this album, it's just sweet music that even the jazz-curious could enjoy.
