It's tempting to quickly dismiss this record as just a couple of guys with drum sets making lots of noise with them while random synthesizer bloops are played in the background. (The guys are Zach Hill from Death Grips and Greg Saunier from Deerhoof, and the bloops are provided by John Dieterich, also from Deerhoof.) But WAIT! [SPOILER ALERT] Starting about a minute into track 6, the 7.5-minute "Frank vs. Frank," Joana Newsom (yes, THAT Joana Newsom) starts playing the harp in the background. At the end of the track, the drummers even stop playing for a while so that you can hear what Joana is playing. Then she stops playing, there's a massive explosion between tracks 7 and 8, and things get back to normal. It isn't really "musique concrete" because the drum sets are recorded fairly "straight," with relatively little effects or processing, at least not until the end of track 10 when some of drumming is played backwards. What it is, is drumming — and lots of it. Once you've heard this, you won't need to hear any drum solos for at least a week or two, maybe longer than that.
