Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 8% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.1/100, a mean average of 76.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 9.2.

I am in total disagreement with the previous comment, because I think 'Middle Of The Road' is a great track that fits well into the album. It wouldn't work with many bands, I agree, but the Meters can pull off something like this precisely because of who they are: The Meters.

This band has always put the music first, as their instrumental records prove. You have to remember that they are first and firemost great players of their respective instruments. They are not here to make you reflect on society or to try to impress you with their views. No, The Meters are here to groove, to put a smile on your face and use the power of rhythm and music to heal your soul. And in this album -and that song- they do!

I also think this album is probably their most cohesive since their first one. They exploit the theme of New Orleans really well and every song (including 'Middle Of The Road'!) adds something to that theme.

So, I think this one is my favorite Meters' album, even better than their self-titled and Rejuvenation!

It's sort of obvious that Middle Of The Road, a non-characteristic, aimless 8-minute modal jam, is a huge clunker and should have been omitted; while the next track, Running Fast, shouldn't have been cut short. Very weird choices. The first 7 or 8 tracks, though, are more classic funk from one of the 70s' great bands; the highlight for me is the cover of Three Dog Night's (via Argent) Liar.
