Look, the Rheostatics are never going to gain their rightful place on these charts. You have to listen to their works a few times before they start to stay in your head, and that prevents them from mass appeal, but once you start to unlock their genius you'll swear by them forever.
Among fans of the band, The Blue Hysteria isn't often cited as a favorite. Not that it's disparaged but it doesn't seem to have the same hold on people that Melville or Whale Music do. But for me this is their peak. There's so much to appreciate here that I have no idea where to begin in my praise. Can I just say that I'm not a fan of the left-wing politics in the lyrics to "Bad Time to Be Poor"? But the song itself is an eminently catchy grunge rocker in the vein of Neil Young. Besides that, I don't know if I can find anything else to complain about. From the trippy "Fat" to the achingly sweet "An Offer" to the epic "A Midwinter Night's Dream", the songs flow perfectly and reward the listener at each stop.
