For a fantastic movie that's ABOUT music and pushing musicians to the limit, this album is surprisingly... meh. The title track, Caravan, and bits of other pieces that are played by the ensemble(s) in the movie are great, but it's the Hurwitz compositions which bring the album down. They're used wonderfully as backdrop pieces in the movie, but they're just very tame, and in my opinion somewhat ill-fitting of a movie that is anything but tame. This is not to knock Hurwitz as a composer, I think he's fantastic and has some well-deserved awards. I think some of the choices for this soundtrack were just not the best choices that could have been made.
