Lovers is Mickey Newbury's sixth album, and his final for the Elektra. Newbury's songwriting works best in two styles: melodramatic country and classic pop. After the melodrama of his trilogy and the outlaw country of I Came to Hear the Music, Lovers is a treasured collection of classic pop, gospel, Nashville country and light folk. The album flows wonderfully, and each song each delivered in their entirely, unlike I Came to Hear the Music, which had song sketches that did not know how to blossom.
It's still mostly country music here, but Newbury would go full throttle into a classic pop style a few years later, starting with the His Eye is On the Sparrow album.
