Usually when I listen to albums these days I'll skip past the singles if I already know them. But I couldn't do that this time. Lorraine Ellison's original version of "Stay With Me Baby" is such a powerful recording, it refuses to let you hit that skip button. The song is highly dramatic, so it can come across as ridiculously overwrought in lesser hands (as several inferior cover versions will attest). But when Ellison sings it, you believe her 100%. And the way her voice settles back down into the 2nd verse after that first breathtaking chorus can send chills down the spine.
What's remarkable is how many of the other songs on this album come damn close to reaching the same heights. Every track here deserves at least 4 stars. This is the kind of deep authentic soul that makes Dusty in Memphis sound like Spiceworld. Sadly, Ellison never got the recognition she deserved. Just a few years after this she retired from music to care for her ailing mother. And in 1983, she succumbed to ovarian cancer at age 51.
