funny, maybe that is the way I should rate albums in the future. I haven't heard this album so I am not commenting on the quality of it..
....I agree. Whilst the sound and style of this piece appears to be rooted in the DJ Shadow/Spooky tradition of sampling, its diversity and eclecticism defies obvious categorization. The recording infuses everything from Turkish psych rock to Bollywood, free jazz, Hendrix and everything in between. But the element in the overall sound which ultimately is its driving force, is a merging of the deranged blues of Howlin' Wolf, and Tom Waits and the powerhouse garage of the Stooges and MC5. Unlike his contemporaries, Gonjasufi is prepared to dig below the surface of the soul in order to reveal pain and anguish in a way that the blues in the early black music expressed the pain and frustrations of its generation. A modern masterpiece.
So this came up on spotify and I was surprised just how amazing it is. I can see how the eastern rhythms throw some people off. As a Das Racist and Mahavishnu fan, I’m very used to hearing eastern rhythms in my hip hop and psychedelic rock respectively. I’ll refrain from rating it until I can sit with it a few more days. As of now, I think it’ll find it’s way onto my top 100.
