In Australia there were bogans and there were skeggs. Skeggs were skaters or surfers. Bogans listened to AC/DC and Iron Maiden. Skeggs listened to Dead Kennedys and Suicidal Tendencies. Anthrax seemed to awkwardly straddle the two subcultures. I never had much love for the skegg music back in the day and yet here I am about to see Suicidal Tendencies for the first time live in Melbourne as a 51 year old after seeing Iron Maiden last year. I don’t even listen to much thrash or metal these days. Is this some sort of perverse desperate nostalgic grasping on to my past, not wanting to let my youth slip so far from me that I can no longer recognise the angst that drew me out of familial shadows? Maybe.

Pioneers of several genres of music always switching gears while maintaining the same attitude. Their run of albums from their debut through The Art of Rebellion is great. They’re highly underrated.
