I've always felt like AVA has been unfairly maligned by having the position of being the afterlife of Blink-182. We Don't Need To Whisper is a marvelous record. Tom's lyrics are sometimes clunky and don't always hit the mark (particularly on AVA's later albums), but you can really hear his own personal nuance come out in some of these records.
DeLonge's voice, for one, has improved tremendously and the complexity of his songwriting also really takes a step forward in the first two records. He really embraces his glossy Cure-influenced guitar melodies and science fiction obsessions and as a result there are some really beautiful moments in this discography that seem to be overlooked by those who resent his abandonment of pop-punk.
