Painters & Dockers are an Australian rock band that formed in Melbourne in 1982. They were named after the Federated Ship Painters Union following an early gig at a venue frequented by union members. Essentially the band is Paul Stewart’s as the mainstay on lead vocals and trumpet. In 1984 they released their debut album “ Love Planet “ to critical acclaim with the album interwoven with a distinctive Melbourne flavour and strange sexual connotations . The bands next release would be “ Bucket” a live album that captured the legendary wild performance the band had become renowned for . Interestingly the album cover for “ Bucket” featured the band naked playing dead in a butcher shop covered in slabs of raw meat, the cover was deamed too offensive and deleted soon after release, copies are now considered collectors items. The bands next studio release would not come until 1988 with “ Kiss My Art” and some moderate commercial success was obtained with the album peaking at number 23 on the Australian Charts on the back of successful singles “ Nude School “ and “ Die Yuppie Die” . 1989 to 1998 saw 6 more releases “ Touch One Touch All “ ( 1989) , “ Hickory Dickory Dock “ ( 1991) , “ Nervous 90’s” ( 1992) , “ The Things That Matter” ( 1994) , “ Overt and Deliberate Live “ ( 2009 ) and “ Advance Australia Where? ( 1998) yet further commercial success would evade the group.
