Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)

This artist is rated in the top 2% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 82.6/100, a mean average of 82.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.6/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 13.8.

Tremendous funk band. Never received the recognition they deserved. Put on a hell of a good show at Woodstock.

This compilation of the early stuff from them is really great. It's a really happy version of funk. Designed to make you dance.

So funky, yet so topical. Sly had the cajones to say what others were thinking. He helped open up r&b to new sounds, but a new attitude as well.

Yes, daftpunter, you are right, Miles heard a concert of theirs and was so excited by the audio reaction that he wanted to do something similar, something that the rock audience would like, so that was the inspiration for "Bitches Brew".

Sly's impact on music was soooo great that even the great Miles Davis adjusted his view on music and followed him. In the few albums (Dance To The Music, Life, Stand!, There's a Riot Going On, and Fresh) made prior to the drugs sapping him of his muse and sanity Sly simply made the funkiest Rock and Roll ever. Parliament doesn't exist without Sly. Funk wouldn't have been what it was without The Family Stone. An important band (man).

"Family Affair" is my fav Sly record, I remember when their first hit "Dance to the music" came out in 1968. me and a friend were in the back seat of our car going to the grocery store with my mom, and "DTTM" came on the radio,..we just looked at each other and said "What the hell is that!" I hadn't heard anything that mindblowing since "papa's got a brand new bag".
