Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.2/100, a mean average of 71.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.1.

This album doesn't have a great reputation; it doesn't have any hits, and there are other Sly albums that get played before it. When I finally got around to it, I kept waiting for it to live down to that reputation, but it just kept funking with great horn riffs, a big full sound, and each song its own unique thing. If a Sly album can be an obscure, hidden find, this is it--none of these tracks get played to death on oldies radio, you haven't heard it 200 times already. People do Sly & the Family a disservice by treating them as a hits-only band. Their albums are great, even this one without a hit on it. Side one is better than side two, though.
