I can't fathom why a band THIS good didn't make it big. Maybe they were ahead of their time. Their finest albums (Let it Be and Tim) are filled with memorable songs that are both unique and universal in their themes of teenage heartbreak and social commentary.
Many indie bands of the 80s college rock scene were different or had an unusual sound. But, out of all the indie bands of that specific time period, in my opinion, none rises to the level of the Replacements.
Responsible not only for inspiring many bands after them, The Replacements produced such classics as "Androgynous," "I Will Dare," "Bastards of Young," "Swingin' Party," "Here Comes a Regular," "Left of the Dial," "Kiss Me on the Bus," "Alex Chilton," "Sixteen Blue," "Can't Hardly Wait," "Skyway," "Nightclub Jitters," and "Seen Your Video."
The Replacements will one day, hopefully, be recognized for their talent and tremendously timeless songs.

The band that described the world like no other band could. No singer can sing with the emotion Westerburg could, and no band could mix jams like Tommy Got His Tonsils out with softer songs like Androgynous and make it work so well. I always assumed they were in the top 100 here, but they're at 133? I'm glad people think Coldplay and Arctic Monkeys, not to mention generic guitar bands like Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, are better than the voice of the 80's.

Their lyrics make them. They're beautiful and sensitive and clever, they know the truth of human nature. It's all very relatable and it makes me love their sound because they blend extremely well to portray that gritty, independent, American feeling, like Bruce Springsteen.
