Vicious and unrelenting, this album's portrayal of domination, S & M, torture, and serial murder couldn't be more overwhelming if it's auteur's blood-smeared face were to rise up out of the hell it leaves in it's wake. As an artistic statement it's brave, whether it's healthy is debatable. [First added to this chart: 02/06/2014]

Like 'Holocaust' the music here is just as desolate and as disarrayed as the emotional devastation portrayed on the infamous Big Star track. Nearly every line Kozelek deliver's packs an emotional punch to the guts whose sole aim appears only to emphasise just how shitty life is but also how unintentionally funny it can be. A terrible beauty is born. [First added to this chart: 04/03/2014]

Another slow-burner of an album from PG. This time his weirder, electronic compositions make more of an impact than his usual piano-led laments. Odder and queerer (pun intended) than before, this is a more aggressive approach than before - and all the more welcome for it. [First added to this chart: 09/05/2014]

To Be Kind rages, surges, and swells with all the fury of a storm ready to flatten an entire continent - presided over by some kind of possessed, demonic slave driver with all the forces of hell behind him. In full force, this is the musical equivalent of being slammed in the face, repititively, with a shovel. It's good. [First added to this chart: 05/15/2014]

No great change from much of his work post-Blur but yet another fine album to add to his already formidable canon. Remarkably similar to Robert Wyatt, Albarn specialises in a kind of wistful yet resigned melancholia that weaves it's way through a 21st Century 'Brit-pop'- rich in African and ethnic music that celebrates the multicultural, melting-pot that is contemporary Britain. Icy synth-punk that owes more than a little to Wire, Magazine, or Ultravox - cuts such as 'Liberal Party' or 'Safety Net' wouldn't sound out of place on 'The Correct Use of Soap'.
Not to detract from their originality or melodic nous, much of Typical System, especially 'The Hunter' has the kind of songwriting chops most cold waver's would kill for.

The return of Labradford (albeit two-thirds) see's a further distillation of their wash of sound. The nearest music will get to evoking the existential emptiness of a Rothko painting as Satie-like melodies emerge from the surrounding, sculpted noise. Here, the minimilism is a maxism and as spine-tingling as an ice cube slowly drawn down the arc of your back. [First added to this chart: 09/18/2014]

With an album composed of American and Caribbean spirituals from the mid-19th to early 20th centuries primarily concerned with the theme of death and faith it is odd the sense of calm and peace that manages to permeate this album. Whether that peace comes from accepting that everything dies or from the relief that comes from letting go, Unclouded Sky is a singularly beautiful album. [First added to this chart: 04/01/2014]

Space-rock's not dead! Clearly indepted to Terry Riley, especially 'Poppy Nogood', Seer has the honour of being one of the few releases to show there's any life left in the genre with it being as illuminating and as explorative as any of the records released in it's mid-90's prime. Another fine album from Morrissey with the music sounding, surprisingly, more casual and looser than ever. Although the lyrics retain the master's trademark snarl, the rhyming scheme is his simplest to date, even if they deftly and sucessfully tell their story. His story is not over yet.
