Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 11% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.9/100, a mean average of 73.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.5.

Interesting genre clash of classical, indie guitar and electronica, music always interesting, but not amazing the vocals are intriguing but may be a tad annoying.

Clever, distinctive, and quite powerful. The opening track is one of my favourites of the decade.

this has clicked.

I Am Not Afraid is fantastic

Interesting album, but I feel that Owen is sometimes a bit over ambitious and artsy fartsy.

It's like someone took all of Belle & Sebastian's sad songs and added Logic Pro X electronica effects to it.
I like it.

I have been a fan of Owen's for years, and this is a good album, but I too am having a hard time digesting it, and it's been out for quite a while now, but I've only listened to it three times, so I'm listening to it again now, and I hope that it clicks this go around because I want to love this album, and I am having the same problem with the new Wild Beasts album (though some of that might be attributed to some aftertaste from their previous record), so I will listen to that one next.
Edit: Appreciation just went up. It's still no Heartland, but it's actually quite good.
Perhaps a slight step back after "Heartland," but nonetheless Pallett remains one of the most compelling figures in music today. Pallett's vocals are moving and intimate, and the electronic/classical soundscapes are perfectly sculpted environments for his voice. It says a lot that this is probably the third best album Pallett has ever released, yet it's still one of the best of 2014.
Suggested Track: "On A Path"

That album cover... D:
There are some really nice moments here, but I'm finding it difficult to digest. It's definitely unique, complex, skillful, etc. Maybe it just hasn't clicked yet.

Orchestro-pop, pop baroque, or whatever it is that string arranger Owen Pallett does, it is pretty original, with or without the synth burblings on offer here. For sure, the arrangements can be ornate and neo-classical but it is Pallett's unmistakeable talent for a good pop tune is what makes this so captivating.
