2013 – SOUTHEASTERN
Produced By DAVID COBB
1. Cover Me Up
2. Stockholm
3. Traveling Alone
4. Elephant
5. Flying Over Water
6. Different Days
7. Live Oak
8. Songs That She Sang In The Shower
9. New South Wales
10. Super 8
11. Yvette
12. Relatively Easy
Maybe the greatest musical joy of the last decade and a half has been watching the growth and rise of Jason Isbell. He joined Drive-By Truckers in 2001, and his powerful songwriting was a big part of that band for the three albums he was with them. But you could tell it wouldn’t last long. You can’t keep a phenomenal songwriter like Isbell to 3 or 4 songs per album for very long. He left the Truckers in 2007, and immediately embarked on a solo career. His writing and his albums have improved ever since, and Southeastern has to rate as one of the very best albums of the 2010’s. Written and recorded in the aftermath of an intervention and rehab, the now sober Isbell lets it all fly free on this album…and it’s beautiful. One song after another is simply masterful, and by the last song you’re not ready for it to end, but you find yourself wishing instead that he’d made this a double album. If you think the album as an art form is dead, then you have simply not heard Southeastern.
The highlights on this album are breathtaking. “Cover Me Up” sets the tone for this most personal and gorgeous work. “Traveling Alone” is everything great about Americana. Then you have the great “Flying Over Water”, “Different Days”, “Live Oak”, and the beautifully touching “Songs That She Sang In The Shower”. Southeastern is an instant classic, an album you will fall in love with immediately, and a truly great work. Isbell’s songs touch the heart, and he paints a picture as fine as anyone ever before him. He’s that rare kind of writer where you find yourself identifying with nearly everything he writes, and you find yourself wishing you could live the world through his eyes. Southeastern is a simple album of amazing songs stacked gently one on top of the other, and it’s absolutely perfect. His follow up, Something More Than Free, continues to show his mastery, but Southeastern is where Isbell reaches the peak. This is a must have, without question. 2013 – RCA
Produced By JAY JOYCE
1. Spiderhead
2. Come A Little Closer
3. Telescope
4. It’s Just Forever (Feat. Alison Mosshart)
5. Take It Or Leave It
6. Halo
7. Black Widow
8. Hypocrite
9. Teeth
10. Cigarette Daydreams
The first thing that I noticed about Melophobia was that it is nowhere near the heavy rock that caught my idea with their self titled debut album from 2008. Five years later, it seems that the band had abandoned its punk and heavy rock roots in favor of a somewhat psychedelic and much more mellow sound. In fact, the two hits from the album are soft pop rock by definition. My initial disappointment with this record came from just that…these guys went from not being afraid to rock hard to barely being able to rock at all. But after the initial shock of hearing this band be so quiet came the realization that they were actually able to pull this off. Melophobia (which means fear of music) may be different, but that does not mean that it is, by any means, bad. It took them a lot of guts to make a record like this, and to their absolute credit, they made it work quite well.
The songs that are central to Melophobia are “Come A Little Closer” and “Cigarette Daydream”, while “Take It Or Leave It serves as the centerpiece for it all. That this band has been able to so quickly change their entire dynamic without sacrificing any quality at all is remarkable. This is a big step up from their lackluster second album (Thank You, Happy Birthday)…and, in fact, it’s even better than their debut. These songs have cool, spacey arrangements, and the vocals of Matt Shultz are cool in the same way Lennon’s processed Beatles vocals were always so good. And while they do use their ability to use their heavy background sparingly, when they do (the first half of “Teeth”, for instance), it works very much in their favor. This is not a perfect work, but it surely is a nice surprise. And much better than the first listen indicated it would be. [First added to this chart: 09/17/2018]

2013 – COLUMBIA
Produced By THOMAS BANGALTER, GUY-MANUEL DE HOMEM-CHRISTO, TODD EDWARDS & DJ FALCON
1. Give Life Back To Music
2. The Game Of Love
3. Giorgio By Moroder
4. Within
5. Instant Crush (Feat. Julian Casablancas)
6. Lose Yourself To Dance (Feat. Pharrell Williams)
7. Touch (Feat. Paul Williams)
8. Get Lucky (Feat. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers)
9. Beyond
10. Motherboard
11. Fragments Of Time (Feat. Todd Edwards)
12. Doin’ It Right (Feat. Panda Bear)
13. Contact
This French electronic duo announced their breakup in 2021, but their last album was released all the way back in 2013. Random Access Memories was that album, and it was absolutely a winner. As in the Grammy Award for Album Of The Year, along with four other awards. This was by far their most successful work, hitting number one in ten different countries, including the US, the UK and their native France. The big hit here was “Get Lucky”, an irresistible dance hit that featured Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. This is an almost perfect dance album, reminiscent of the best disco albums of the late seventies. What a way to not only peak a career, but also to cap it off. This is the definition of going out on top…even if it was almost a decade later.
For me, the only downside is the duo’s use of computerized vocals on almost every track. If you can be okay with that, then this may be perfection for you. The songs here are great, exciting and true dance anthems. Along with “Get Lucky”, Random Access Memories also includes “Doin’ It Right”, “Lose Yourself To Dance”, “Give Life Back To Music”, and “Instant Crush”…all really fine tracks. The drums are mostly live, with plenty of bass and guitar to go along with the electronics, and the guest vocals are all well done. It is a shame that Daft Punk never did a full follow up album, but you have to acknowledge what they were able to accomplish in just four releases. Random Access Memories is definitely worth hearing, digging, and enjoying. [First added to this chart: 02/22/2025]

2013 – WARNER MUSIC LATINA
Produced By ALEX LORA
1. Fue Como Un Sueño
2. Donde Quiera Hay Chilangos
3. Otra Vez El Pri
4. La Antorcha Olimpica
5. Eres Lo Máximo
6. La De La Vela Perpetúa
7. Contiga Me Conformo
8. Ojo Por Ojo
9. Otra Muerta Más
10. No Estoy Pedo
11. Na’mas Le Cambian De Cara
Hey Dino…who the heck is El Tri? The answer goes all the way back to 1968 and a rock band from Mexico City called Three Souls In My Mind. Pioneers of Mexican music, the band split in 1984 when bassist Alex Lora started the band El Tri, which has gone on to massive success in the world of Latin rock. In fact, Lora is widely regarded as the grandfather of Mexican rock and roll, and his band has released over twenty albums over the years. Ojo Por Ojo is their 15th album, and it came at a time when the band had become less prolific…this album was only their third since 1998. And, as happens to bands that have slowed down (such as The Rolling Stones), the songwriting tends to be not as sharp as it once was. And that does seem to be the case here, as far as musically (lyrically? I can’t tell ya. It’s all in Spanish, folks.) the band has a nice level of energy, almost making up for what they lack in originality.
Lora is the chief songwriter, and while a lot of the songs are based on his own personal experiences, he has always also had an open door policy with his fans. They send him ideas of things to write about, and he does just that. Pretty refreshing for a rock star. The rock they play on Ojo Por Ojo is pretty straight forward, with not much to indicate that they aren’t from Hollywood or New Jersey. Except for Lora’s singing. It’s all in Spanish, and he sounds as if he might have taken his vocal cues from Cheech Marin (or, given the timeline, vice-versa). But this band has had huge success over a whole lot of decades, and that includes having played some pretty big shows in the United States. So, while what I hear on Ojo Por Ojo may sound average, I’m not afraid to admit that this is a band that may require some further research. Perhaps they are the Mexican Stones or Black Crowes? I will keep you posted… [First added to this chart: 03/31/2019]

2013 – RAZOR & TIE
Produced By HIILI HIILESMAA
1. Unleash The Red
2. All Lips Go Blue
3. Love Without Tears
4. I Will Be The End Of You
5. Tears On Tape
6. Into The Night
7. Hearts At War
8. Trapped In Autumn
9. No Love
10. Drawn & Quartered
11. Lucifer’s Chorale
12. W.L.S.T.D.
13. Kiss The Void
HIM (His Infernal Majesty) was one of the most successful bands to have originated in Finland. Their brand of Gothic rock made them successful in a lot of countries, and although none of their albums reached the American top ten, and only one (2005’s Dark Light) was certified gold in the US, they were big elsewhere. Their first five albums went platinum in Finland, and in their home country they had four straight albums reach number one, with the next three peaking at number two. Tears On Tape was the eighth and final album by HIM, and it was their lowest seller, although it was one of those Finnish number two’s. But this is a band that was quickly running out of gas.
The better songs on Tears On Tape are the title track, “All Lips Go Blue”, and “Into The Night”. And while their sound is solid and polished, it’s pretty evident that they just weren’t feeling it at this point. The album is very well played, but there’s almost no energy behind the performances. It feels more like going through the motions than anything else, but even so, they are still good enough to make it at least a good listen. There just won’t be anything that really sticks with you. It is my recommendation that if you want to hear some of the best hard rock that Finland has to offer, then seek out this band’s earlier work. This one just doesn’t have the energy that HIM had on their other efforts. [First added to this chart: 12/01/2019]
