After a diversion through 60s psych-folk, Ray has bumped up to 70s psych-folk. But where Supernova did nothing for me, this is great. It's like he and co-producer Jim James just sat around and listened to Pink Floyd's Meddle for days on end and then this happened. I am digging the sound of this record and I respect that it's meant to be consumed as an album.

The next time someone asks me why I love the South, I think I'll just give them this album. Compiled by the go-to producer for Nashville outsiders, Dave Cobb, this is a collection organized around the idea of the meaning of family. The themes that run through these songs just feel like home to me.

This puts to rest the debate over whether he'd still be country. It's not that this album is extra-super-country (it's not), it's that he clearly made the record he wants to make. Still, all the indie kids who want to love him but can't handle liking country just need to get on board. Good country music is good.

It is a subdued collection, which does make it harder to get into. But there's so much happening down in the layers. It has the same density of information as The King of Limbs, but where that felt almost suffocating, here it's enveloping. It feels more organic.

This is his first album in four years and his first since relocating from California to Tennessee. The change of scenery did him good; this is the best thing he's done in 15 years.

I reference your charts for recs quite a bit, and the flatland cavalry position intrigues me, but that "sippin' on shiner" line is keeping me from listening. It's just too annoyingly Texas. and that's coming from a guy with a Texas tattoo.
