2020 was a milestone year for women in music: women in familiar genres (pop, dance, indie rock), women in male-dominated genres (jazz, ambient, EDM), and even women in production, mixing, and engineering. It was a year for women uplifting women, from Nadia Shah's encouraging young Muslim women to get into music to The Chicks' putdown of toxic masculinity to Fiona Apples' threatening to boycott the Grammy's due to Ke$ha's abuser's nomination. And it was also a milestone year for trans musicians in a variety of genres.
Let's hope this is a sign for music to come.
