Update 25th August '21: I can officially say we're at the point where this list is really taking shape. 2021 has been dolling out some incredible records, and the current top 10 is looking very good indeed. A whole host of releases to come yet that could well shift this a lot.
Update 23rd December 2021: The order is complete for this year's list, and I'm very happy with it. WHAT a year 2021 has been for music; trust a pandemic to help produce some of the best music in years.

Best songs: Woman, Little Q Pt. 2, How Did You Get Here
Little Simz delivers the career-defining release she's been gearing up to drop for years now. An articulate, honest, refined assessment of her life, her relationships with fame, family, friends and what she cares about, contained in perhaps the most well produced British hip hop record of a generation. Spellbinding introspection and total class, an immensely moving thing to listen to. [First added to this chart: 09/06/2021]

Borders on the miraculous. The most forward-thinking post punk record released in decades; an admonishing, terrifying potrayal of world where the mental scape and the reality scape are being blended further and further. Nothing make sense anymore, but thank god this record does. [First added to this chart: 05/13/2021]

Best Songs: In The Stone, Psychic, Til Dawn
Colder, cooler and more accomplished than the intimacy of their first two releases, Mirror II is the album of a band trying to carve out a legacy on their own terms. Mirror II feels as if it's the result of years of restlessness to create an original sound, which it perhaps struggles with too much. And yet, the talent of so many of its riffs and lyrics makes this The Goon Sax's most adventurous work to date. The palette may have shifted, but their appeal hasn't been diminshed in the slightest. Best songs: Superman That, Postpostpartum, Knees
Intense, abrasive, with omnipotent delivery. 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix' is ultra-advanced hip hop, strung through such an array of soundscape lenses that it borders on the ambient. Underlain by an anxious view of the world, depicting its troubles as monsters, Injury Reserve depict a culture saturated, hard-to-define existence that has astonishing depth. Best songs: Alphabet, Born In Luton, Snow Day
Expressive, earnest, a wraggle with modern boredom and disconnection, searching for tangibility within its blunt, broad, gray-scale guitars. Shame have come leaps and bounds from their riveting, compelling debut, with their follow up coming across far more composed and complete. A proper grower, one that will no doubt offer more exceptional live material for their already exceptional live performances, and in the meantime, soundtracks the immense stillness of life in a lockdown world.
