Lana Del Rey can be a little hard to understand but she remains one of the best artists in mainstream music today. She has always been boundary pushing and has glamorized this life of sex, drugs and sadness and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Born to Die, her debut album, has a more Hip Hop inspired sound that radiates cool and swagger. There are a couple of busts on this album like Diet Mtn. Dew, Million Dollar Man and Dark Paradise; but, Video Games, Born To Die and Off to the Races almost make up for these with their grand arrangements and spunky attitude.

Ultraviolence, Lana's Magnum Opus, starts off very strong and contains some of her best works like Shades of Cool, Brooklyn Baby and West Coast. The back half of this album however, doesn't compare at all. It all starts to sound similar and the charm no longer there. The Other Woman is a great closer but still doesn't hold up to the first half.

Honeymoon is a bit of a hard listen. Again, the first half of this thing is fantastic. Terrence Loves you, High By the Beach and Freak are the standouts. As you get past Art Deco, things fall apart and left a bad taste in my mouth. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood might be her worst song to date.

Overall, while she's not perfect she is one of the best ones out there on the mainstream scene. I am always awaiting a new Lana record and I can only wish the best in her future endeavors.

A brilliant light in all genres. People say she's manufactured; who cares if she's playing a "character" to any degree? She is making music that connects to people and makes them feel things. Also people change between 18 & 30. She is an artist.

Ultraviolence is better than Born To Die in the sense that it is much more ethereal and subtle (nay lo-fi) than before. Del Rey is trading classic pop sounds for the lightness of guitars and slow beats full of sexyness which make is work deeper in my opinion.

I don't understand the fuss - good or bad. She seems alright, but certainly not brilliant.

"Paradise" is Del Rey's successor to the successful album "Born to Die" also released in 2012. "Paradise" is considered a mini-album, sometimes even as an EP. The playing time of over 33 minutes is more than what many classic albums of the 1960s from groups like The Byrds, The Kinks and The Beatles offered. In fact, only one single album released by the Beach Boys in the sixties surpasses "Paradise" in playing time. My point is, of course, that I in no way feel cheated because of the short running time of "Paradise".

In fact, I think you could well claim that the eight songs come out as a very homogeneous release, whereas on "Born to Die" there were a few songs that seemed unnecessary and umimportant.

"Paradise" also features a trio of stand-out numbers here. Especially the opening track "Ride", is a distinguished dramatic ballad that shows Del Rey from her very best side. "Cola" with its controversial lyrics is also an irresistibly catchy popsong. Del Rey's cover of the old Clover song "Blue Velvet" surpasses for me all previous versions of this song that I have heard. The song does not in any way fall out of place on the album, where the music otherwise written by Del Rey herself with help from various friends.
