I didn't want my top 20 to exclude anything made after the year 2011, so I picked this, the fourth Beach House album, and the one with the song "Irene" on it — my favorite song of theirs. Besides, the third album, "Teen Dream," came out in 2010 so that one was ineligible. [First added to this chart: 05/25/2022]

Twenty-two years... that's a long time. I don't think any band has ever returned from a hiatus of that many years and produced a comeback album as good as this one, though if you expand the criteria to include television, I did rather enjoy "Twin Peaks: The Return." Honeyblood are (or were, at least) a duo consisting of two young women from Scotland, who proved on this album that you don't necessarily need a bass player to make great records. I wish I'd known that when I was in a band. [First added to this chart: 06/26/2022]

I first heard of these guys when Ben Watt, best known as Tracy Thorn's partner in Everything But the Girl, made them the first signing to his new record label, Strange Feeling (which only covered UK distribution). "If Ben likes them, well then, they must be good," I reasoned, even though Ben & Tracy were already doing lifeless Eurodisco albums at that point. But my reasoning turned out to be solid: The band made four albums, each one better than the previous one; this is the fourth. The band broke up soon after, probably because they kept making great albums that for some reason weren't selling. (The lead singer, Christian Hjelm, still makes solo records — though he sings the lyrics in Danish, so maybe that was the problem all along.) I hope that someday they'll get back together — Denmark is a small country, after all, so they'll probably all run into each other on the street eventually. [First added to this chart: 06/28/2022]

This is currently one of the two most obscure albums on this list, as I appear to be (at the time I'm writing this, at least) the only person active on this website who's even heard of it. DIV I DED is, or was, a nu-gaze duo from Frýdek-Místek in the Czech Republic (or Czechia, if you prefer) whose name has to be explained spacing-wise to everyone who hears it, but you'll just have to trust me — it's worth figuring out the whole spacing thing because this album is just that good. (The cover art, well... maybe not so much.) [First added to this chart: 06/28/2022]

Sure, it was a little "jarring" when they suddenly altered their style from depressing post-rock dirges to edgy electro-dancepop without telling anyone in advance. It took a little time, but I came around soon enough, because it really is a great album. Let's all just try to remember that this band's strengths lay in defeat! Down the rabbit-hole we go! This is currently one of the two most obscure albums on this list, as I appear to be (at the time I'm writing this, at least) the only person active on this website who's even heard of it, or at least willing to rank it somewhere. It's also the second-most recent release, but there's probably still time for people to come around before the world ends in a gigantic fiery apocalypse or whatever. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 6% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.6/100, a mean average of 86.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 90.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 16.1.

Fun chart with some downright hilarious write-ups. I listened to an XTC album (Skylarking) yesterday at your suggestion. Unfortunately not a vibe for me.

Great chart, not because of the music, because of the hilarious comments. Of course it could be a great chart music wise, but I wouldn't know, although the few albums in it I do know are very good. I would never have thought of checking out XTC's go2, but now I just might! P.S. The DIV I DED album is now in another chart.

Very interesting chart. Glad to see included a number of artists I like who don't usually get as much recognition as they deserve, eg The Auteurs, The Associates and Lush. Also, I enjoyed the witty comments, eg on the Beatles and Paul McCartney albums!

I've had a lot of fun checking out this chart and reading the comments. Definitely different to most BEA charts and that's what I really like. It ooooozes personality & sincerity (no BEA peer pressure here!)
I love it that we only have 1 album in common.
I love it that a citizen of the USA significantly favours the music of the UK (very very rare in my observation of BEA charts).
I love it that I can return to this chart and (hopefully) discover an album/artist (or 2) who has evaded my line of sight & hearing for the past 50 - 10years ¬ and be everly grateful for the guided discovery.
I love it that someone from the northern hemisphere has included 1 album from Australia (that is not Nick Cave, AC/DC, Tame Impala or KG&TLW) AND 1 album from New Zealand (any album from NZ is amazing!).
