'99:b All In His Head
"I had just moved out from my mom’s basically — living on the couch of a friend — when we did Still Life. I was piss poor, really. Didn’t have a future… whatever future I had looked bleak..." - Mikael Åkerfeldt
The Setting: It’s kind of unbelievable. Coming upon this tale and this band all these years later. How could a band this talented, this far ahead of their peers be on the brink of financial ruin. Their visionary stuck between living with his Mom and couch surfing. Not the best odds for one’s romantic prospects to say the least.
The Listen: Maybe it’s better this way. Maybe my kids never would have been born if I had know about this band, this album way back in 1999. Because this is some life changing shit. Rule breaking shit. Especially for the Death Metal scene. I mean this isn't even Death Metal anymore. Not by a long shot. It's sweeping, romantic, melancholic & melodic Alice In Chains meets Mercyful Fate Prog Metal with no real precedent. How did this even happen?!
Let's have Mikael himself explain it...
"I didn’t have much hope then, to be honest, so I figured we’d go all in. I was so immersed in the whole prog rock scene and collecting records at the time we did Still Life, so I figured “let’s go all in” and make this record, see what happens. If it doesn’t, then, take off."
That's what it took. The willingness to block everything else out and just be open to your own inner voice. The willingness not just to be good. To be accepted. But to be great. THAT is what catapulted Opeth to the next level.
The Verdict: What can I say. I haven’t quite discovered a “new” band in eons that could compete with the metal bands of my youth for that special place in my heart. Until this. There is just sooo much going on - Alice In Chains vocal style & ambience, Mercyful Fate plotting, intricately picked & subtle jazz fusion-y riffs. Patience. Riffs. Variety. Repeat. And to think that all this stuff was just floating in Mikal Akaerfelt head as he pined on his roommates couch for his own personal Melissa.

'99:d "Can u Even do That?! Is THAT even allowed?"
"I didn't think it was possible. Permissible, even." That sentiment comes up A LOT in interviews with the members of Agalloch on the bands that influenced them. Bands like GS!BE, Carcass, Morbid Angel, Bathory, Fields Of Nephilm, and Rush. The members of Agalloch always seem most impressed when bands such as these BREAK the rules. Defy genres. And paint outside the lines of genre convention. So many times bands just want to play nice and fit in. Well the guys in Agalloch also had the guts it takes to step outside of those lines and not fit in, BUT in the most tasteful, seamlessly possible. Because what makes Agalloch unique to me is that they bend genres so seamlessly, so unjarringly & tactfully that u might not even realize that they're doing it. Which is perhaps even more impressive, no?
Anyways, it's impossible for me to really review this until exploring Ulver since they are the base that Agalloch would impressively build on. So to Ulver's demo, entitled Vargnatt, I go. [First added to this chart: 04/01/2024]

'99:c Throwback Thursdays
At it’s core, Euphoria Morning is a classic throwback to those feel good singer-songwriter albums of the seventies. But it's wrapped in so many layers – hard rock, Beatlesque psychedelia - you may not get that at first. The thickest layer is hard rock, and although I'm kind of late to discovering this total gem, it's easily one of the best Hard Rock albums of the nineties as well.
The songs are catchy earworms that are meant to be sung as your driving down I-95 blocking out, at least mentally, all the maniacs driving all around you. If you’re looking for angst, go back to Soundgarden, who delivered that in spades. No. this is a chance for Chris Cornell to show a slightly different side, but honestly if you loved mid-nineties Soundgarden a la Superunkown andDown On The Upside you’re probably going to love this too. The two sets of songs would be more than comfortable rubbing elbows together on some AOR ‘90s Alt Rock dial.
Before I depart, let’s get to the reason why we showed in the first place. That voice. One thing that's really not talked about enough is that grunge provided a cornucopia of vocal riches. Layne Stanley. Kurdt Cobain. Mark Lanegan. A total treasure trove that could match any era of hard rock as far as I'm concerned. But my personal favorite was Chris Cornell. And if you’re a fanboy like me, this albums delivers on that front as well.
All in all a very solid album, and I'd easily give it 4 stars. [First added to this chart: 03/19/2024]
