m = minimum number of ratings required for an item to appear in a 'top-rated' chart (currently 10).
AV = the site mean average rating.

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.1/100, a mean average of 70.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.1.

When it all comes down to it, No. 4 is probably my absolute favorite album released by any of the big six 90’s Grunge/Alternative Rock bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, STP, The Smashing Pumpkins).

I loved Tiny Music and was excited for this release but found No. 4 incredibly underwhelming. It was a mistake to lapse into a heavy metal formatted album at a time when there was an expectant audience waiting for a progression in their sound. It’s generally a bit flat and it’s not helped by a limited vocal display from Weiland. The slower songs are unmemorable (other than perhaps Atlanta), and contrast poorly with the distorted guitar tracks. However, they are a talented band and there still is something in this album for the fans.

A really great STP album, but I am pretty sad that they ditched the somewhat psychedelic build up from Tiny Music with this album and went back to what will be basics for much of Weiland's songwriting for the rest of his life (RIP). Still a definitely great album, not sure why it's so shunned.

Sounding a little unfocused (is boozy a good description?)

Everyone had written off Weiland and the STPers at this point in the 90's, but going back and listening to this one 10 years after the fact, I'm not sure why. No, it wasn't Purple or Core, but it still had some very good moments, and if some of these songs had been released four years earlier they would have been big on MTV. Of course context does matter, so this one was quickly relegated to the bargain bin, but as a fan of the band, this one should not be forgotten.

"Down" "Glide" and "I Got You" are three of the better tracks here.

This goes back to a heavier sound, which is great, but it doesn't have as many good SONGS as Tiny Music did. But whatever, it's still a pretty good album.
