The pure emotional outpouring, frenzied guitar crescendos, and contemplative lyrics all combined to create an album that would move a whole generation of emotionally intelligent music lovers. Thom Yorke broke down and cried after recording Fake Plastic Trees. A 50+ yr old neighbour of mine, who had no interest in alternative music, was also brought to tears when I played the same song to him for the first time. It is a song that is all too confronting for the universal truth it conveys about the futility and senselessness of living in a fabricated relationship with the world around us. Street Spirit is the closer that leaves you wondering about the premonition of a world that has been completely consumed by that same fabrication. And it is all so eerily beautiful. The album only suffers in that it still has the feel of a band finding its way out of the early 'Radiohead' sound that could have defined them. They are beginning to tap into their creative genius with songs like Street Spirit and Planet Telex, but mostly it is merely a supremely good guitar based rock album boosted massively by a few songs of deep visceral emotion. I say 'merely' because the creative flowering of the band thereafter makes 'mere' guitar rock seem a little passé."  [+]  Reply

Their lead singer is a neanderthalic thug with annoying vocal affectations like 'sheeeeeiiiine', and their fans are just as moronic. They steal everything and don't have a single new musical idea of their own. They world's most successful Beatles/Slade tribute band. They were one of the biggest instigators of the Loudness War. Their songwriting consists of Moon/June rhymes and the same few clichéd themes (the weather, leaving the city, songwriting itself). They revel in their anti-intellectualism. Early-'90s British indie music was getting along quite promisingly until they came along and overwhelmed it. They were the prime example of how the entirety of the Britpop movement was inherently creatively bankrupt due to how backwards-looking it was. They never changed and basically kept releasing the same album over and over again. 'Slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball' is one of the worst lyrics ever written. "Overall, Oasis' music is derivative, repetitive, unambitious, inane, generally backwards-looking and Pulp were better anyway." Yes, I admit it's hard to argue against almost any of those complaints... ... but I love this album anyway. (Though not quite as much as Definitely Maybe.)"  [+]  Reply

Half the al...""This is a daunting one. Taking up a spot in the top 20 most renowned albums of the 90's is this huge beast of the night. The first thing I like about this album is that it feels like a world onto itself. The packaging is superbly decorated and sets the tone well for the music to come. Half the album is called 'Dawn To Dusk' the half 'Twilight To Starlight'. Does give the impression that the night will be sung of a lot doesn't it? Well... we are half way there. It does for the most part but the concept is not entirely stuck to. Half concept album are you madam? Let's begin! Right at the start you have an instrumental which would fit easily on Classic.fm. Grandiose aims ahead indeed! Despite the size, this isn't a slap it on your iPod and hit shuffle. From the connections between the title track and 'Tonight, Tonight' and 'Jelly Belly' into 'Zero' it is clear they wanted you to listen from start to finish. So what are we give n in this album? Violent music coupled with sweet serenades. That's right. Serial killer music. 'Lily' the tender ballad and possible highlight of the second half reeks of it. He almost caught her smile? Almost? I do hope it is because she can smile. I hope she smells nice. I know this album doesn't. Don't smell bad either. Well there is like this faint smell. I got it from a market in Keswick what... 5 years ago now? Yes, the album has a faint smell of damp books I suppose, the inside not the plastic. Other highlights on the album you say? '1979' the ghostly whispers of an arcade burned to the ground with a fantastic bass riff. 'Jelly Belly' comes charging like the cavalry, full on distortion. It is one of the heavy ones here alongside the bile spitting 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings', the rabid 'X.Y.U.' and Stone Temple Pilots esque 'Bodies'. When they turn it down they perform just as well. Ditties such as 'Thirty Three' and 'Lily (My One and Only)' will prove that. Massive collection containing almost every All the twilight dwellers and ghouls between. "We only come out at night, the days are much too bright' indeed."  [+]  Reply
