Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.7/100, a mean average of 77.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 19.5.

Guttural vocals alongside vocal melodies. Tranquil rhythms one minute, brutal metal the next. Opeth are masters of musical blending and do it so well. Great album from start to finish. Gets better every time I listen to it.

This was actually my least favorite album upon first listening when I started listening to Opeth. Now it's probably my favorite by them. It's Opeth at their best, mixing beauty and brutality seamlessly. The way the first track, The Moor, builds is perfect and is one of their best songs. Serenity Painted Death is the only song that I'm not infinitely enthusiastic about, but it does not diminish my enthusiasm for the rest of the album. If you're a fan of progressive rock and/or death metal, I absolutely recommend this album. And band.

My favorite Opeth record by far, and one of the most underrated metal albums of all time. It combines the best parts of the My Arms, Your Hearse and Blackwater Park and every song is masterful.

Probably my favorite metal album of all time. There's a magical and medieval feel all across the album that's unlike any other metal album I've heard and it's GREAT

Agree with the one above me. It can't get why this isn't in the top 1000. Opeth's best along with BWP.

Opeths second best album. It kinda falls apart after the opening track, but it works well as a prog and death metal album. Freaking awesome, overall.

Criminally underrated on this site, this is Opeth's best along with Blackwater Park.

Dark, heavy and hugely enjoyable. My preconceived notions of the album were shattered.
