Top 67 Music Albums of 2013 by MadhattanJack
This was probably the last Really Big Year™ for albums before smartphones and streaming services started to take over. This was also the tail-end of the Nugaze Era™, and also the peak of the Great Pop Songwriter Shakeout™, after which only two or three people wrote hit songs. (I think they're down to just that one Swedish guy now.) It was also the beginning of The Golden Age of Adding Trademark Symbols To Arbitrarily-Named Time Periods™, which is somehow still going on as I type this.

I can't really explain it, and most people will of course disagree, but somehow this obscure album by an obscure band from somewhere in the Pacific Northwest represents, to me, the pinnacle of the entire shoegaze-nugaze-spacerock genre. I'd rate it as highly as Souvlaki or Loveless if the last half of it were as good as the first half. Also, "Jetman Jet Team" may be the best band-name ever, at least within that genre. They're probably really nice people if you meet them in person too, though I never met them in person. I just thought I'd throw that in there.

In some ways I actually like this album more than Loveless, though this opinion is considered heretical by fellow shoegazers. I sort of wish the shoegazers hadn't formed their own religion and churches and the inevitable Inquisitions and torture chambers to go with it all, because that way I could maybe express opinions like this more openly, but apparently this is what the music industry is all about now.

There are people who will tell you Robyn has been "coasting" ever since 1993, but even if that's true, which it isn't, this is one of the three or four best records he's made since then. Oddly enough though, there are relatively few insect references.

This was the closest thing to an actual shoegaze album involving Neil Halstead to come out between the years 1994 and 2017, so it gets extra points for that. (Otherwise it would be more like #9 or #10 on this list.)

The early Stargazer Lilies singles were so uniformly fantastic that when they finally recorded a whole album, namely this one, it was kind of a disappointment. So if you want to get into this band the way I did, listen to their "Lost" compilation first, then this one. But why would anyone want to be like me? What makes me so special? Is it my hair? It's my hair, isn't it? Should I just shave it all off, then? Is that what you want?

Still Corners started out as a more guitar-oriented tweegaze-type band, and with this album they started getting more synth-oriented. Obviously the main thing anyone's going to like about this band is Tessa Murray's voice, if not Tessa Murray herself, but if you like a nice balance between guitars and keyboards then this is probably the album of theirs to check out first.

The last great Bowie album. Or maybe just the last really good one. After 1983 everything got a little "fuzzy," Bowie-wise.

They'll probably never get the credit and accolades they deserved, what with being from Bristol and everything. They never made another album after this, but I'll always remember them as one of those bands that should have been huge, and probably would have if they'd only given themselves a better name.

Its not quite up to the high standards of their earlier material, but it's still great, and really, why would you apply such standards to a kite? Especially if the kite is your own brother. Sure, you might be from a dysfunctional family and maybe you don't like to play outside in high winds, but give these guys a break at least.

This is Album #3 of Wire Phase IV, though it could also be Album #4 of Wire Phase III if you're one of "those" people.
