VIVE LE QUEBEC LIBRE
This will eventually end up being only one album per band in chronological order from most recent to older with the exception of Félix and Gilles Vigneault keeping the first and second place they deserve.

A singer and his guitar. Sometimes he is accompanied by an orchestra for the sake of the times and the oversea audience in France but these are not the versions that people love and listen to. With a career started in 1951, Félix is one of those artists whose catalogue we speak of more in terms of songs rather than albums. So here is a compilation album I strongly recommend since it includes his best known and loved hits "Moi me souliers" et "Le p'tit bonheur". There currently is an anthology available on Amazon.ca which covers 232 songs over 10 CDs at a very affordable price (less than the regular price of a double CD). For the price difference, if this is something you want to get into, why not go for everything, I just did not have the courage to be the one entering all of those 232 titles into the BEA database (at least not yet).

Once a year on June 24 everyone recognizes Gilles Vigneault has the embodiment of Quebec pride. If we ever do get our country, one of his songs "Gens du pays" or "Les gens de mon pays" will undoubtedly become the national anthem.

Similar to "1 fois 5". A history in the making concert. With 3 instead of 5 giants on stage they have more time each. When this was recorded, Charlebois was not a giant yet, he was there representing the youth and the new sound in contrast to the traditional offered by Félix and Vigneault.

Five of the sacred beasts of Quebec on stage together for Quebec's national day celebration. History in the making until the concerts got eventually too big and riots ensued which lead to huge concerts like that being no longer held for a few years. Thankfully, eventually the fear died down and the June 24 annual celebrations have gone back to being amazing gathering events showcasing the whole gamut of Quebec's artistic scene.

A short cut for those who do not want to get all the albums on my list. You will notice that songs I highlighted are included here. very few choices are "odd", most of these artists deserve to be here and in most cases the choice of song was right on. What I find interesting is an apparent censorship of songs having lyrics indicative of drug use (no "Frog Song", no "Le monde est Stone" and "La tête en gigue" instead of "welcome Soleil" for Jim & Bertrand - come on!!!). Then there is the issue of the obvious missing giants. There may have been copyright issues involved but the question of space would not have been sufficient to justify not including Plume for example (but I can think of a few others).

Rock-blues: Offenbach (http://www.offenbach.ca/) = the first French language rock band from Quebec. A blues influenced rock sound with street level poetry as lyrics. In early rehearsals, Pierre Harel listening to singer Gerry Boulet singing “calling the blues” realised that the song was not loosing any of its raw power if sung “Câline de Blues” instead, Quebec rock was born. Pat Harel eventually left the band to go form the second greatest Quebec rock band, Corbeau. Offenbach would become slightly more pop towards the end when John Mcgale became the main song writer. Recommended albums: any compilation (some of their good stuff is unavailable otherwise), the live albums (particularly En Fusion), but mostly the albums: Offenbach (1977); Traversion (1979); & Coup de foudre!! (1981) – avoid their 2 English language albums.

Rock - After being part of the premier Quebec rock band, Pierre Harel set out to form the second Quebec rock band. Just as Offenbach was dominated by a charismatic singer and became known as Gerry`s band, Corbeau was fronted by a charismatic singer Marjo and became known as Marjo`s band. Sad how Harel is often forgotten when Quebec rock owes him such a debt. Corbeau’s music was released on CD only in the form of this 2 CD anthology, it is complete. Their main hits are: Ailleurs, Illégal, Having a strong female lead this to launch a few anthems for them lady rockers out there such as : Cash-moé, Marche. J’lâche pas. Marjo had a successful solo career after Corbeau.

Pop/Singer-songwriter - The ultimate embodiment of Quebec music. Their debut album has mythic status. An ensemble band which prefers acoustic over electric guitars but does not fall into the folk/traditional trap. A must if you want to know about Quebec music.

I love this chart! I figured Offenbach and Harmonium would be there, and I'm glad Celine Dion and Roch Voisine are not. There is so much great French-Canadian music to explore here - I'm intrigued by The Dale Hawerchuks on name alone.
Maybe you should include the Guy LaFleur disco album.
Vive le Quebec Libre? Charles de Gaulle go home! ;)
