Quebec Love (French Canadian Music) by Robert Anton Wilson

Quebec music (French Canadian music).

VIVE LE QUEBEC LIBRE

This will eventually end up being only one album per band in chronological order from most recent to older with the exception of Félix and Gilles Vigneault keeping the first and second place they deserve.

Work in progres...

Thanks to the input from my nieces for the pulse of the contemporary scene.

Similar to "1 fois 5". A history in the making concert. With 3 instead of 5 giants on stage they have more time each. When this was recorded, Charlebois was not a giant yet, he was there representing the youth and the new sound in contrast to the traditional offered by Félix and Vigneault. Five of the sacred beasts of Quebec on stage together for Quebec's national day celebration. History in the making until the concerts got eventually too big and riots ensued which lead to huge concerts like that being no longer held for a few years. Thankfully, eventually the fear died down and the June 24 annual celebrations have gone back to being amazing gathering events showcasing the whole gamut of Quebec's artistic scene. Rock-blues: Offenbach (http://www.offenbach.ca/) = the first French language rock band from Quebec. A blues influenced rock sound with street level poetry as lyrics. In early rehearsals, Pierre Harel listening to singer Gerry Boulet singing “calling the blues” realised that the song was not loosing any of its raw power if sung “Câline de Blues” instead, Quebec rock was born. Pat Harel eventually left the band to go form the second greatest Quebec rock band, Corbeau. Offenbach would become slightly more pop towards the end when John Mcgale became the main song writer. Recommended albums: any compilation (some of their good stuff is unavailable otherwise), the live albums (particularly En Fusion), but mostly the albums: Offenbach (1977); Traversion (1979); & Coup de foudre!! (1981) – avoid their 2 English language albums. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2012]

Pop/Singer-songwriter - The ultimate embodiment of Quebec music. Their debut album has mythic status. An ensemble band which prefers acoustic over electric guitars but does not fall into the folk/traditional trap. A must if you want to know about Quebec music. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2012]

Pop/Singer-Songwriter-Prog (l'heptade) - For a while, Harmonium had high import value and success. They had a very short run of only 3 studio albums but they are all 3 extremely revered and well loved in Quebec. Serge Fiori had a nervous breakdown and that was then end of that story but the legacy endures. L’heptade is a prog concept album. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2012]

Pop-Singer-songwriter - A crooner and pop singer who did a little 2 album foray into the prog-concept albums vein in the early 70s with Jaune (1970) and Soleil (1971). If you like the singer-songwriter sound, one of his later album “Écoutes-pas ça” is definitely worth a good listen. Most of his music cannot be found on CD in its original published form but is available through compilations or box sets. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2012]

Rock (psychedelic tendencies) - A very short lived entity which released this only album. A very good basic rock albums. “Le monster d`la Main” and “Mon chum” are the 2 minor hits but it is all memorable. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2012]

Folk pop (this album - pop otherwise - Once described as linking Bruce Springsteen with Jacques Brel, this is his debut album and it is atypically folk. However, it does include the mythical Quebec songs “Mon Joe” (the ultimate song to ring in the new year) and “Y’a pas grand chose dans l’ciel à soir” or “Heureux d’un printemps” which are ultimate campfire songs. Paul shook his folk-bearded look and sound most with his break-out hit album “nouvelle d’Europe” (1985) when he raised to the Quebec top 40 chart with songs that no longer had any campfire or folky connotations such as “Cochez oui, cochez non”, “Ses yeux” and the grand song “Quand je perdrai mes chaînes!” The mural in front of which he wass photographed, downtown Montreal, was repainted to a more urban theme only a few years back, it was there for years. To the best of my knowledge, Beau Dommage never did any English song or album. I am deeply covinced they never would.

Beau Dommage are a band whose music has been played on the Radio Finland (YLE). Music journalist Jake Nyman, has presented the band in its programs. I liked to hear. Did BD, none of the English-language albums?

I love this chart! I figured Offenbach and Harmonium would be there, and I'm glad Celine Dion and Roch Voisine are not. There is so much great French-Canadian music to explore here - I'm intrigued by The Dale Hawerchuks on name alone.

Maybe you should include the Guy LaFleur disco album.

Vive le Quebec Libre? Charles de Gaulle go home! ;)
