Quebec Love (French Canadian Music) by Robert Anton Wilson

Quebec music (French Canadian music).

VIVE LE QUEBEC LIBRE

This will eventually end up being only one album per band in chronological order from most recent to older with the exception of Félix and Gilles Vigneault keeping the first and second place they deserve.

A singer and his guitar. Sometimes he is accompanied by an orchestra for the sake of the times and the oversea audience in France but these are not the versions that people love and listen to. With a career started in 1951, Félix is one of those artists whose catalogue we speak of more in terms of songs rather than albums. So here is a compilation album I strongly recommend since it includes his best known and loved hits "Moi me souliers" et "Le p'tit bonheur". There currently is an anthology available on Amazon.ca which covers 232 songs over 10 CDs at a very affordable price (less than the regular price of a double CD). For the price difference, if this is something you want to get into, why not go for everything, I just did not have the courage to be the one entering all of those 232 titles into the BEA database (at least not yet). Singer-songwriter - rock-pop- Along with Céline Dion and René Simard, Richard Séguin is one of those Quebec artists that has grown in the public eye. His first huge solo hit was Double vie (1985). He has remained on of the most loved acoustic guitar singing troubadour-rocker on the Quebec scene. Well, with such a penetrating glance and beautiful blue eyes he couldn’t do otherwise – or so is plethora of female fans say. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2012]

Pop/Singer-songwriter - One of the main composer behind the Beau Dommage myth. Michel had a hard time shaking off the Beau Dommage adventure and success to become his own “So what about a reunion Michel?” Then this album came with its own iconography, style and accompanying videos and the idea of a Michel Rivard success story was finally accepted. Just like Phil Collins with genesis, even though Beau Dommage did end up reforming, Michel Rivard by then had become more than just a member of the band. The song “Je voudrais voir la mer” belongs among the top 10 best Quebec songs ever. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2012]

Rock - I do not know what it is about the Quebec scene that has so many bands flash unto the scene with an album and hits that assures them posterity, they follow-up with a critically and publicly acclaimed album and then vanish from the charts. I think one of the element is due to the small size of the audience that it forces artists to diversify if they want to put food on the table so once they get a hit which provides some steady income they need to find a “real” job and remain involved in the music business but less at the forefront and become music producer, managers, music teachers, multi-media artists, radio or TV host or for the unlucky ones, lawyers. I know these guys sued one another shortly after their early success, shame, shame, shame. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2012]

Expérimental - A very interesting and sometimes funny musical experiment. Basically taking language and building music with it withot altering the rhythm. Rene/ Lussier used varions recordings to act as is backdrop for his electronic music experiment, whether it be the Queen of England speaking to the crowd in her impeccable French, general Charles de Gaulle with his famous “Vive le Qu/bec libre”, Quebec personalities such as René Lévesque (after the defeat of the first referendum for Independence), Richard Desjardins, poet, musician and social commentator and environmental activist or people from the street to whom he asks street directions or interviewed through a vox populi. My favorite bit comes in song 3 when he builds a danceable rythm to a famous union leader’s warning that the big cheese bosses are now going to get their « dues » in a segment called « C’est ça qu’on va faire ». An important recording both for its archival richness and musical inventiveness. Includes participation by Fred Firth, a pion [First added to this chart: 11/03/2012]

To the best of my knowledge, Beau Dommage never did any English song or album. I am deeply covinced they never would.

Beau Dommage are a band whose music has been played on the Radio Finland (YLE). Music journalist Jake Nyman, has presented the band in its programs. I liked to hear. Did BD, none of the English-language albums?

I love this chart! I figured Offenbach and Harmonium would be there, and I'm glad Celine Dion and Roch Voisine are not. There is so much great French-Canadian music to explore here - I'm intrigued by The Dale Hawerchuks on name alone.

Maybe you should include the Guy LaFleur disco album.

Vive le Quebec Libre? Charles de Gaulle go home! ;)
