Quebec Love (French Canadian Music) by Robert Anton Wilson

Quebec music (French Canadian music).

VIVE LE QUEBEC LIBRE

This will eventually end up being only one album per band in chronological order from most recent to older with the exception of Félix and Gilles Vigneault keeping the first and second place they deserve.

The French version of Arcade Fire. Currently has 3 albums, all 3 very strong albums. Here`s hoping for a long career, these will unlikely end up ranking up there with the group Quebec pioneers. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2012]

Pop - His break-through hit was "Tue-moi". Has worked with so many artists. Sort of the Tom Jones with a Tom Waits voice and Kris Kristoferson attitude of the Quebec scene. Maybe I am just name plugging here but that sounds about right. [First added to this chart: 11/03/2012]

Acoustic guitar jazz (pop rock songs) - Three guys, three acoustic guitars and a shitload of energy. This is really fun. All the songs are covers with most of them having “guest appearances” by the original artists. A pot pourri of the best kitschy crowd pleaser songs Quebec has to offer performed in a non kitschy way – at least if you appreciate that bohemian-flamenco acoustic guitar vibe. Rock - Good solid mix of that traditional Quebec feel within a more modern pop-rock sound framework. I do not know how popular these guys really are but they are one of the most listenable young groups for old farts like me and they still have that young feel to them. I like them. Rock-pop-punk - It is tough for me to comment on this album because this is one of my niece’s favourite band. This is young and energic punk (or is it proto-punk?) which I compare to the English world comparative of Linkin Park or Sum 41 (or is it Sum 42?). Anyway, I find it interesting how the 60s shone by spearheading protest songs while the new generation lags behind in my opinion because they keep writing whiny song. Hey boule-de-gomme, s’rais-tu dev’nu un homme? [First added to this chart: 11/03/2012]

Pop-punk - Once again, youth energy music recommended by my music. I think this is punk but it sounds like pop-rock, pop-punk to me (I am definitely not a punk aficionado). These are clearly among the top of the current youth (as in young adult – not teen or pre-teen youth) scene in Quebec. [First added to this chart: 11/03/2012]

Pop - The Quebec French version of shows like American idol or The Voice is called Star Académie. It includes less contestants and emphasises more their training and evolution through the weeks than American Idol does. Marie-Élaine Thibert may have finished in second place of the first season of this show but she undoubtedly was the big winner because she really launched a singing career out of it. She is very young and her texts do reflect this but her voice is amazing, it has an international French flavour to it. Sometimes she sounds like a young, less raundhy Edith Piaf particularly on the song “Mon Coeur est un numéro” which always pleasantly reminds me of la môme’s song “Mon manège à moi c’est toi.” [First added to this chart: 11/03/2012]

Pop-punk-rock - Young high energy group. Very funny and hard to resist. Most Quebec bands like to be funny. [First added to this chart: 11/03/2012]

Now this is a band that worked to get discovered. They first made their way through the hearts of the student audience, self-produced cassette and CD demos until the word of mouth about their music and their energetic, humoristic yet socially relevant shows grew from a underground murmur to an inevitable cry for more and the finally came the first album. Since then, even though they are now allowed to play with the grown-ups, they still always insist on building from the ground up and in remaining connected with their audience. If success would mean neglecting the shoulders of those they stood on when getting their big break, then success would be seen as a failure for those guts who remain authentic. These guys are constantly touring and are on the bill of every special event held in Quebec (national day concerts (June 24), homage or charity concerts). [First added to this chart: 11/07/2012]

To the best of my knowledge, Beau Dommage never did any English song or album. I am deeply covinced they never would.

Beau Dommage are a band whose music has been played on the Radio Finland (YLE). Music journalist Jake Nyman, has presented the band in its programs. I liked to hear. Did BD, none of the English-language albums?

I love this chart! I figured Offenbach and Harmonium would be there, and I'm glad Celine Dion and Roch Voisine are not. There is so much great French-Canadian music to explore here - I'm intrigued by The Dale Hawerchuks on name alone.

Maybe you should include the Guy LaFleur disco album.

Vive le Quebec Libre? Charles de Gaulle go home! ;)
