Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by armoury (2013)

« View previous chartView next chart »

I first truly discovered music in 2006 (I was 12), obviously only being 7 at the time The Strokes and White Stripes had passed me by completely but upon hearing Arctic Monkeys for the first time I fell in love with music. Following the Arctic Monkeys I went on to discover the other albums of the time; Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party etc. about two years later I really started digging deeper finding The Strokes for the very first time and giving the Beatles a proper listen, from there the cornerstones of my musical landscape were formed, everything else just came sooner or later. Some of the records on this list are higher than others due to the associations I have with that particular album for example I first discovered The Velvet Underground after missing a ferry in Norway and having to wait for two hours in the rain with nothing but my mum's ipod for company and miraculously landing on Sunday Morning from then on it has remained my favourite song ever. As such my chart shows my personal taste in music not how "influential" an album is, for the record I adore every album on this chart and I could easily name another 50 albums which I love just a little less.

I've enforced a two albums per an artist rule now to ensure greater depth but I don't think it's worked as I've just added a second Beastie Boys and Daft Punk albums in place of third Dylan and Smiths albums.

The Queen Is DeadThe Smiths
The greatest album ever, fullstop. Took everything that made The Smiths so perfect then perfected perfection. I feel the same way about this as I do about Star Wars, if you don't like it then I probably won't like you .Marr never equalled it musically and Morrisey's lyrics and witticisms were spot on perfect. What really made The Smiths perfect though was the juxtaposition of Morrisey's melancholy lyrics and Marr's happy jangly guitar. I'm ruling "Hatfull of Hollow" out on the basis that it's a compilation otherwise it would probably come first.

Is This ItThe Strokes
This is hardly the most adventurous or challenging album ever recorded but what it lacks in creativity it more than makes up for it in excitement. For me this is just the sound of being young and epitomises Indie and to be honest this is put simply really fucking cool, who would not want to be in The Strokes?

ScreamadelicaPrimal Scream
Put simply this is incredibly clever and completely unique, making use of sampling and some fantastic production whilst also sounding like a human album able to touch so many emotions, utterly brilliant. The diversity of the styles exhibited here elevates this beyond even The Beatles, this touches everything; classic Stonesy rock, ballads, psychedelia, Stone Roses' bass-lines, dance, gospel and the second part of the "Higher than the Sun" remix almost sounds like the introduction of dubstep.

DoolittlePixies
This is truly brilliant. There's something about this that's almost cultish from that artwork that looks like a poster for a slasher film to those violent opening chords but not once to the Pixies ever sound like some fake goth pretender this is just too real for that, if taht makes sense I hope it does? This is probably an awful description but seriously just listen to it, if you don't like it you're probably a bit of a wanker. Oh and I'll freely admit to falling for the Pixies after watching "Fight Club" for the first time, I was 15 and it remains one of my favourite films and Pixies remain one of my favourite bands, pretty important night for me all in all.

RevolverThe Beatles
This is arguably the most influential album of all time but that's not why this is so amazing, sure Yellow Submarine is crap but for a song like that to be on Revolver just shows how ambitious the Beatles were too include a kids song on an album featuring psychedelia, rock, pop, ballads even R & B, so great that even the Jam stole from it. The moment Tomorrow Never Knows comes on this just becomes incredible, reminding me of that moment in Mad Men when Don puts on "Revolver" and the world seems to gain this crazy, psychedelic energy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afddyqxT1To

FuneralArcade Fire
Another band who go from great to absolutely incredible through being seen live, on "Funeral" Arcade Fire showed all the excitement and passion expected in a début album yet also created a fully formed work of genius. This really is an album of euphoria, not a cheap Calvin Harris instant gratification moment of joy but an album where the first chords can bring a smile to your face just through knowing what's coming next and long after the songs leave you you'll still be smiling with the joy of the memory as when the thrill of each instrument combing at the perfect point hits, it never leaves you.

Up The BracketThe Libertines
If Julian Casblancas was a poet then "Is this it" would probably sound like this, "Up the bracket" is every bit as thrilling and exciting as "Is this it". This lacks the perfection of "is this it" but more than makes up for that with the completely British scuminess layered over.

The Stone RosesThe Stone Roses
The record that inspired Oasis, what more can I say, Ian Brown was a brilliantly cocky frontman but it's the music itself that really stands out, to think that a band pigeon holed as "lad rock" could be so talented and create shimmering riffs propelled by relentless interlocking rhythms is startling. Dare I say but in terms of musical talent they may well be the greatest ever, even more so than Led Zep.

Automatic For The PeopleR.E.M.
For a band to break into the mainstream with an album this original is startling; never as jangly as their earlier albums R.E.M had instead developed and perfected their own sound creating one of the greatest albums of the 90's. For me the main beauty in "Automatic..." comes from the gentle coherency of the album; bruised and slightly vulnerable but never the less strong.

Marquee MoonTelevision
These guys sound to me like the proto-Strokes. This shows, to me at least, that punk can be as creative as it is destructive, it seems amazing that it took over 30 years for a band to capitalise on such a brilliant sound and with "Guiding Light" they proved that being punk means never conforming infact even being prepared to move away from the frenetic sound of punk to move to moments of beauty.

They are underrated indeed, especially their first 3 albums.

Also, my apologies but this is probably the first time I had a good look at your chart and I have to say it's very good. I don't agree with a few choices but you obviously put a lot of thought in it. Plus points for putting comments on each album.

Really like it. Good work here. Some great choices, although I'm not a big Smiths or Queen is Dead fan, generally this list is top notch!
