Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 80.0/100, a mean average of 79.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.8.

After a slightly disappointing 2nd album (You're Gonna Get It), Petty & the band broke out big with this album. Showing some punk attitude and the frustration over a recent fight with their record comany, Petty comes out with a bit of a snarl and a collection of great songs. From start to finish, this album is loaded with well written songs. The band is dead on, and Petty sounds like he is ready to take over the world. The album has aged incredibly well, sounding just as fresh 30 years later.

Has it really been 30 years since Refugee? Damn.....

First full Tom Petty album I've listened to.... and I love it! Took me long enough to get around to it. Great tunes. I might prefer Tom Petty over Bruce Springsteen...

An underrated album of classic rock gold. How can you argue with the first half? Tom Petty's peak of his early work.

When it came out in '79 I played this album to death. There's not a song here I don't love.

It's has this Dylan meets the Stones meets the Byrds vibe. It's raw yet sunny. Produced by Jimmy Iovine it has a clean production sound. Every song on the album is great. "Damn the Torpedoes" is an excellence album.

A truely great rock album that I played on high rotation when I discovered it in 1985 and still a great listen today. From Refugee to Even The Losers, Don't Do Me Like That and all the rest.
