For a comeback album, this is a departure for TFF, stressing tightly arranged pop over the expansive soul searchings that they’d been doing. Doesn’t have the big hits of Songs from the Big Chair, but, top to bottom, I find Happy Ending to be more cohesive and more listenable, with surprising orchestrated touches that make it a very welcome discovery. Highlights are “Quiet Ones,” “Closest Thing to Heaven,” “Killing With Kindness,” “Secret World,” and the title cut. Quickly becoming one of my favorite records of the decade, and quite a send-off for these talented guys.
"Everybody loves a happy ending", "Call me mellow" & the bonus track "Pullin a cloud" are the standouts on this album. Also check out the other bonus track "Out of control" on the UK/EU release. Why this wasn't a huge international success I don't know. Pure perfection & just as good as The seeds of love and Songs from the big chair.
Good album, great melodies and a cool ambience. The style of this one has been compared to The Beatles, and perhaps it would've been better with a little more Beatles style and a little less ELO, but still a great addition to the TFF collection.
