Hey, these guys totally ripped off The Beatles... 🤣🫵 . Ok ok... just kidding. I liked this quite a bit more than Ravi Shankar's stuff I've heard, mostly because I really like the tabla playing on this. Don't remember it being that good on Ravi's records (as other-wordly those records take me). Anyway, this was a much needed release from 2 palette cleansers (but I also thank Chief for getting them off my list).
2. Lots of interesting live records there- tough to chose between those, so I'll just take it off the top.

I've never vibed with Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders that much (that's why I haven't listened to this one yet), but I'll have to give them another shot after this. I mean, this record is just incredible. So smooth, fantastic production, Q-Tip's flow is as impressive as ever, and those (unfortunately too few) Phife verses were excellent. Not to mention Jarobi coming back. The first half is very highly rated here, but the streak from The Killing Season to The Donald on the second side is to die for. The list of feats is impressive, but not only that, those features are all used very well. From Jack White's riffs/solos on several songs (Ego and The Donald were the best) to Andre's great verses on Kids, to Kanye singing the best chorus on the album imo (The Killing Season), to Kendrick, Elton John, Anderson Paak, and Busta + Consequence combo. Old school hip hop course for the new kids. RIP Phife. 8.5 or 9/10

I'm quickly wondering if half of the 1001 albums you should hear before you die... you shouldn't...
Anyway, this is not my cup. I don't care if the lyrics are interesting for some. This reminds me of parts of David Bowie I actually hate - maybe he was a Scott Walker fan. I just can't get over the vocal style - I feel like I'm listening to Neil Diamond in a bad way, but with more risque lyrics. But I could see how one who likes stuff like Pulp Fiction aesthetic or what have you would eat this up. I suppose you gotta give him props for sounding like elevator music, but totally not be/borderline impressive artistic statement. Next was an ok track maybe... but in the end I can't get over the performance of the music itself. I gag trying to take this seriously as much as I like how it near mocks this style. 2/65.
2. Very interested in your take on Flying Lotus and Carly Rae Jepson, but since they aren't there yet, let's take it off the top.

Oh yeah!! This is some hard rocking fun. Throughout the album I could hear some stoner rock, space rock, psych rock, hard rock, grunge, and even a bit of metal. All of this makes for some decent variety to the album while still maintaining a consistent overall sound. A couple of very minor missteps maybe, but a couple of excellent songs in there too, like Look to Your Orb for the Warning, and Third Alternative. I really enjoyed this. 8/10, and 9/38 for 1995.
I also listened to Heavenly - a sweet jangle pop twee pop album. 7.5/10, and 32/43 for 1991.
Next chart for me is the Top 78 Music Albums of the 1990s by Jameth. I've rated 33 of these and have a surprising 21 in common with my '90s chart.

I've always been a bit torn on The Doors. They've always seemed a bit like they're style over substance. On the one hand you have the commanding presence of Jim Morrison and a brash mix of blues rock and psychedelic rock. On the other hand, the whole thing can sound kind of silly in the right light. The keyboards can be cheesy, Morrison's voice can get old after a while, and his lyrics can leave a lot to be desired. I like the band's debut, mostly for how it feels more adventurous than a lot of other blues rock from the period. Morrison Hotel sounds a lot more like a standard 70's rock album, though there's still enough organ and keyboard to let you know which band this is. I liked a lot of these songs, but sometimes the organ got a little too outrageous and they started to sound like carnival songs ("Waiting for the Sun," while one of the better songs here, was the biggest offender). And boy, does Morrison love his obvious rhymes. Overall though this has the same bombastic blues rock of LA Woman with a bit more variety that hints at the debut's grandeur without ever really reaching it.
I've cooled on Alice in Chains over the years, but this one is still exhilarating.

I was about to write this off as another knock off, but I was really taken back. If there no VU or late Beatles, I'd gladly let this record represent some of those feels. It wasn't just one track but all of them really took on a new sound for themselves while playing with some familiar sounds. I believed this uncanny valley. 4/85.
Side note - I wasn't to keen on Car Seat Headrest as I only listened to the 2011 and 2018 Twin Fantasy. Musically Teens of Denial is making me shit my pants right now. Really dig. (well I'm only two songs in, but I have been excited for a "new record" in quite a bit, so celebrating)

I think this is one of the better albums of Indian music that I've listened to. I've never been taken by anything that I've heard as much as the traditional music from other countries, but this is trending in the right direction. It was engaging and well-performed.
Seth, the albums that are coming up are a lot better than some of the last ones you've listened to, so keep at it. That being said, let's get the last early 60s one done, Ray Price.

Cypher 7- Dead Drop
Glad you dug The United States Of America RTB, I've always thought that they're very under appreciated. Great songwriting (maybe not VU great but still), and a pretty influential album too.

Most of the comments on RYM are "well this goes nowhere". And it really is true. Great sound, solid songs with huge buildups which end in... nothing really. It's just a buildup. Great instrumentation, sets a nice mood, and it's pretty competent and unique art pop/post-punk with some neoclassical darkwave elements to it I guess. Over 30 additional musicians were apparently involved, although it doesn't sound nearly as complex as that suggests. Cool stuff, but that lack of something special is really irritating. Or maybe I just expected a lot of it, being in the number 1 spot. 7.5/10

Mariner, a solid post-sludge record. Actually my least favourite of the 3 Cult of Luna records this decade, but I think you may dig Julie Christmas more than I do, chief. I just think Julie and the band lacked chemistry a bit here.

This was great. It sounds a lot like other turn of the decade indie / pop rock, but I have a bit of a soft spot for that sound. I recognized a few songs here that I had heard on the radio but never knew who they were by. I think my least favorite songs were the rock ones, but there were no weak moments.
I, and a few others here, are waiting to hear your thoughts on EMOTION. But I'm even more curious to hear your thoughts on this, one of my favorites from the decade.

A lot to like on this Metal/ Post Rock/ Ambient album. I can hear where the vocals might turn some off from this project, as I don't know how well her voice fits with the style of music, but by the third or so track I was really digging it.
Babyblue, it's not quite as strange as their first, but Saucerful of Secrets is still Pink Floyd at their most psychedelic.
