Gowi's probably referring to mine. The main thing is to get a feel for someone's taste. What they were <& are> actually into "Heavy"-wise.

Anyways, cool list AfterHours! I LOVED Unsane in the early to mid 90s, and really haven't given them a listen since then!!! Will have to fix that! A lot of us former '80s Metalheads (I guess Gowi would like to now rename us "Hard Rock-heads"!!! ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿ˜œ ) like myself branched off into Alt Metal and Noise Rock in the late 80s & early 90s. Unsane was huge in our crowd! Their album covers alone were legendary!

And let's see yours, Gowi! Mercury
& Led Zep!>

I'd have to think hard. I recieved Mercury's message about a Top 100 of Metal so I'm going to work on that. In the meantime I think I've narrowed things down pretty well, so my ten would probably look like:

The Mantle by Agalloch
Angels Cry by Angra
Rust In Peace by Megadeth
Vol 4 by Black Sabbath
Seasons In The Abyss by Slayer
Awake by Dream Theater
Powerslave by Iron Maiden
When The Kite String Pops by Acid Bath
Operation: Mindcrime by Queensrรฟche
Yav by ะั€ะบะพะฝะฐ [Arkona]

look if you GEEZERS were calling Rush "metal" in the 80s then i find that funny and interesting, id love to see literature on that given metal is more distinctly defined today

i guess metal just meant anything heavier than blue cheer at that point huh

Back then we didn't think of genres in the same way we think of them today โ€”ย these day it's much more complex, obviously, with all the endless crossover going on. In the 70s and 80s it was all set up in terms of radio format, so Rush were an "AOR" or "commercial rock" band, and any other labels applied to them were coming from magazine writers who nobody cared about. Still, I had one or two friends myself who called Rush a "heavy rock" or "heavy metal" band in the late 70s, probably because of the Caress Of Steel album which had a heavy-metal title, arguably some heavy-metal-ish cover art, and most importantly a song called "I Think I'm Going Bald," a reference to what we all suspected was the primary motivating force (i.e., hair loss) behind most heavy rock being released at the time. Later on, of course, the truth came out that Rush was actually a "lyrics vehicle" to promote the work of dipshit-psychopath author Ayn Rand, at which point they stopped being a "band" per se and became simply a "bunch of assholes." But we didn't really know about that until after they'd already released several albums, some of which were okay if you didn't try to make out the lyrics. It was surprising too, because the vast majority of Canadians are actually really cool so you wouldn't suspect one of their biggest bands of being Ayn Rand promoters.

Boy...there sure are a lot of strange thoughts about Rush going on in here...

Another term that's been used to describe Rush, at least in retrospect, is "Heavy Mithril," due to their interest in LotR-inspired "swords 'n' sorcery" fantasy literature. Led Zeppelin probably gets this tag more than anyone else, along with bands like Uriah Heep, Rainbow, Mahogany Rush, etc. It's obviously tongue-in-cheek, but it can work pretty well as compromise terminology when arguing over the question of how "heavy" or "metal" some of these bands were.

I agree that the definitions of metal are quite loose 'round here. Nirvana? while heavy, I don't hear metal so much as punk in it's DNA. Rush? I haven't heard that album so I can't say exactly but from what I have heard about and of that band and album it's like prog rock hard rock at most. NIN's Downward Spiral? Sure, it's heavy as fuck at times, but it's like industrial rock and the heavy bits are noise rock.

And yes I am aware that Grindcore is mildly contreversial as Metal as well. With half the people saying no that is primarily in the hardcore punk tradition and half saying it's pretty clearly and within a few months of inception a mix of extreme metal and hardcore. But that contreversy only applie to Pig Destroyer on my list in theory (and that is to my ears a very METALLIC-y Grind sound), because Terrorizer and Assuck are both Deathgrind.

Blah blah blah... my point being, those designations stuck out to me as I read through this list.

My dad has been telling me for years that all these genre descriptions are bullshit and made up lol. Not trying to compare Repo and Madhattanjack to my pops. There seems to be some truth to what they are saying - I think with the internet and RYM and all this shit, the consensus on genre and sub-genre designations are very fixed whereas my dad and older pre-internet folks are more loose and mercurial with their descriptions. It always 1. annoys me and 2. cracks me up when I play something that is clearly metal or Prog Rock or whatever and my dad says "What do you even mean? This Iron Maiden isn't 'Heavy Metal' or 'metal'!" or "Huh? 'Progressive Rock? That is a designation made up to describe Yes years after the fact, buddy. I was buying these LPs th e day they dropped and I know what we called this back then.".

I really love this list so far. I am stoked to read over it your top 100 closely and plucking many recs. I will say I very much expected Blind Guardian on the top 10. I closely associate you with Power Metal and particularly with Nightfall In Middle Earth.

Edit: just read through it and it's cool! I expected multiple Blind Guardian or multiple by your fave band. Are you doing the 1 album per band thing or will you be including multiple albums in the future where bands have "earned" it?

These will all most likely make my Final 100. Rage For Order, Operation Mindcrime and The Warning could all be quite high. Rust In Peace & Peace Sells should also be way up there. I'd take Piece of Mind over Powerslave anyday. And Vol. 4 & Paranoid will be way up there too.

The one that maybe should have made my Top Ten if I thought about it a little harder would be...

Sad Wings Of Destiny by Judas Priest

Intent will not be one album rules, but I'm still trying to figure things out.

Edit: roughly finished with a rough draft of the 100 but idk how happy i am with it
