Monreale Cathedral - Begun by William II of Sicily in 1174; various modifications thereafter (1267) / Monreale, Sicily, Italy [Architecture]

NOTE: Rating/ranking is based on the interior mosaics being part of or joined with the architecture into "one" work and combined overall value. As I am not sure how this should be counted at this time, this is not a sure thing and makes the current rating/ranking a bit tenuous. If the mosaics and the architecture are "separate", individually counted, then this would split the value a bit, thus dropping the rating/ranking.

Philosophy, Medicine & Jurisprudence - Gustav Klimt (1901) [University of Vienna Ceiling Paintings; Destroyed in 1945]

NOTE: As these were destroyed and are only available in black and white photographs, it is impossible to give a truly accurate rating of the originals (among the saddest losses in all of art). Therefore, they can only be evaluated based on what we have photographically and through the assistance of reproductions, which essentially distill them to Klimt's extraordinary draughtsmanship, instead of paintings with the added expression of his colors and gold and ornamentation. I personally think the original work was probably his masterpiece, the greatest work of his career, and I will admit that it is difficult to remove oneself from this notion when evaluating and rating them as is. But that is what I've attempted to do, even if, ultimately it is probably not truly able to be done with certainty. Fwiw (though we'll never know for sure) I estimate that this work would rate around 8.5/10 or higher, if we could see the originals in color.

Special Note: For many entries, certain notes, insights, analysis, and eventual determinations have not been made alone. In addition to my own observations, I have used many resources over the years to assist me in arriving at my conclusions or in better substantiating them, which would be too numerous to list the entirety of here. I share several resources with those listed in Piero Scaruffi's artist bios (Greatest Painters). Here: https://www.scaruffi.com/art/artists.html ... Additional/special thanks goes to Visual Arts Cork, Mark Harden's ArtChive, Leo Steinberg, William E. Photographs don't do it justice, but the best painting I've seen (or at least the one that has most impressed and fascinated me) is Boccioni's The City Rises. Some of these are OK too.

That's actually a pretty great choice. The only Boccioni I've ever seen is Dynamism of a Cyclist, and it's a pretty fantastic bit of art. Hoping to go to the MoMa one day.

I'm not sure how your grading system works AfterHours Laughing Not that you don't have great picks on there (some not my style...), but surely Vermeer, Monet, Schiele, Rubens, Caravaggio, Lichtenstein, Magritte, de Kooning, Basquiat, Kandinsky and Matisse have some 7.3+/10 paintings? Laughing

Won't list off my favourite paintings, mainly because I don't have a list of that, but my favourite painters consist of Basquiat, Miro, Signac, Pissarro, Seurat, Petitjean, Pollock, Schiele, Botticelli, Monet, Degas, Gauguin, Vermeer, Matisse, Picasso, Klimt, Lichtenstein, Cezanne Rothko, Van Gogh, Dali, Chagall, Bacon, Gorky and Klee.

Post-expressionism and post-impressionism are by quite a bit my favourite styles. For the most part I'm not too big on baroque or renaissance art apart from what was going in in The Netherlands (some exclusions obviously, but it's just not usually what I seek out).

Thank you, Boccioni's City Rises is a great one that I did have in my 7.3-7.7 section a couple years ago. Upon last evaluation it fell below these choices for me but I will add it to my recommendations and give it another eval soon. If not 7.3+, it will likely be featured on the "extended" list I'll be putting together and posting. Some works that are in a somewhat similar vein (only superficially) that are already listed are George Grosz's anarchic, apocalyptic Expressionist masterpieces (upon which Boccioni was probably an influence):

Great selections, thank you! Of those, Boticelli, Monet, Rubens, Miro and Matisse are the most likely to be included when I get back around to them -- each had multiple 7.3+ on my previous list that I was mid revising when listology.com crashed, the content of which I am transferring over to BEA. And just below those (or perhaps equal) could be Vermeer, Schiele and Caraveggio, Picasso (addition to Guernica which is already listed) each of which have several great works that might be included. Aside from Lichtenstein and Rothko, the rest all have works that were at least in my Extended list upon my last evaluations. Except maybe Signac and Pissarro, which I'm not sure about. And I haven't studied much of Petitjean (just cursory observations), though immediate impression is that he captures nostalgia quite well and seems more significant than Signac and Pissaro, who for me (at least by memory) were technically impressive but probably not to the extent to be added -- unless I'm missing something (entirely possible). Each of the others have multiple works that were right on the cusp of this list and worthy of re-evaluation. Do you have particular works you'd most recommend by them -- that you feel the most strongly should be 7.3+?

I've never taken to Lichtenstein or Rothko. Can you explain their greatness in your view?

Sure, but personally, I think their greatness stands for itself. Both artists have extremely unique and recognizable styles, and they're both at the technical height of both their games. Have you ever seen any of Lichtenstein's paintings up close? They're insane. They're usually a lot bigger than you'd ever expect them to be too (which, due to his style, makes sense I guess). Everything is so pristine that it looks like a machine did them. The colours are perfectly monochromatic, and the lines and circles are as flawless as it gets. Also, he brought actual humour into his work. It was okay for his paintings to have jokes in them, one-line stories, metaphors, etc... The thought of having speech bubbles in paintings was absurd before he did it. His more 'comic book' style work aside, he has some stellar masterpieces. The satirical quality of Little Big Painting comes to mind. It was his 'fuck you' as well as a major technical achievement. I'm really quite fond of it. Stylistically, it felt like he could do no wrong. 'Peace Through Chemistry' and 'Artist Studio The Dance' also come to mind when thinking of his masterwork. His work defined the 60's far more than Warhol in my opinion (or at least it should have).

Rothko is Rothko, you know? He had his style and played with colours and came up with some pretty awesome stuff. His early works are always worth a shot as looking at, but the real genius was in his ironic mutliforms. He's an incredibly hard artist to praise due to the simplicity of his work. Was it technical? Not really. Yet people are infatuated with it. It's lovely, it's immersive, it's bigger than life. It's forward thinking, it's poetic, and more than anything else it's decorative and poetic. His paintings had whatever meaning you felt like you could give them, and story you wished. You can connect to them just by forcing yourself to.

Last year I was at a gallery in Italy and there was this completely pitch black room, so I was all like "Aight, I think I'm allowed to go in here, I'll check it out", and the only thing in the entire huge room was one of his paintings illuminated in its frame. I'm not sure what number it was, but it was red on red on red. It was on colour, and I thought it was incredible. It was big too, probably 6x5 feet or so. Whatever he did, it manages to swallow you up. I think his work is actually quite special, and deserves recognition of greatness. Repetition of the works was proof of genius, greatness and insanity. It makes you question a lot about art, and as long as it does that, it'll always remain great.

Da Vinci - La Belle Ferronnière (1460)
Kees van Dongen - The Corn Poppy (1919)
Orazio Samacchini - Hercules and Antaeus (1565)

I should note that your Klimt choices are spot on. The Beethoven Frieze is my favourite by him as well.

Do you have particular works you'd most recommend by them -- that you feel the most strongly should be 7.3+?

Well, going by your scale, and your taste, and I'd say these might deserve a place on your list:

Joan Miro - Dutch Interior II (1928)
Joan Miro - Constellations (1959)
Joan Miro - Catalan Landscape (1924)
Joan Miro - Harlequins Carnival (1924)
Claude Monet - Woman with a Parasol/ Madame Monet and Her Son (1875) (Also, perhaps Nymphéas as a collective)
Basquiat - Philistines (1982)
Basquiat - Glenn (1984)
Matisse - Harmony In Red (1908) (read any analysis on this, they're usually pretty informative)
Rubens - The Fall of Phaeton (1605)
Rubens - The Feast of Venus (1635)
De Kooning - Donna II
De Kooning - Ganesvoort Steet (1949)
Caravaggio - Conversion on the Way to Damascus (1601)
Caravaggio - Saint Jerome Writing (1605)
Caravaggio - Judith Beheading Holofernes (1599)
Caravaggio - The Incredulity of Saint Thomas (1601)
Caravaggio - Supper At Emmaus (1606)
Vermeer - The Music Lesson (1662)
Vermeer - Officer And A Laughing Girl (1657)
Pollock - Number 5 (1948)
Pollock - Alchemy (1947)
Van Gogh - The Bedroom (1888)
Van Gogh - Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun (1889)
Van Gogh - The Night Cafe
Klee - Insula Dulcamara (1938)
Boticelli - La Nascita di Venere (bit obvious, but whatever)
Degas - Ballet Rehearsal (1874)
Degas - The Dance Class (1873)
Schiele - House With Shingles

(not on previously mentioned list)
Jan Van Eyck - Giovanni and His Bride (1434)
Diego Valazquez - Rokeby Venus
Da Vinci - La Belle Ferronnière (1460)
Kees van Dongen - The Corn Poppy (1919)
Orazio Samacchini - Hercules and Antaeus (1565)

Re: Klimt choices spot-on ... Thank you, I try -- maybe a bit too hard Smile Certainly one of the most profound artists. Of his masterpieces, every line, dot, shape, gold decoration, etc, seems to have been given the utmost attention and sensual, obsessively ornamental care. Completely in addition to the often erotic nature of his works and the startlingly original visual art and color schemes he produces, it is amazing that one can see and feel such obsession down to the simplest of his lines and forms. I think this is due to his expertise as a draftsman, combined with the sensation he imbued in his works from his startling avant-garde concepts and the sensuality and awe he conveyed into his paintings for nature, beauty and his sexual preoccupations. The Virgin is another one of his that could very well be included in my 7.3+ list (at the very least, in a high spot on the Extended one). Also Adele Bloch Bauer 1.

Thank you very much for all the recs! I am familiar with all of them, but I haven't evaluated any in at least a year or two, so will put them on my recommendations page to revisit -- 6 at a time so that I don't get too overwhelmed with too many recommendations at a time. They'll be added in approximate order of how likely they are to be added to my 7.3+ list. Most or all of them will already at least be on my extended list when I post it (which is 300-400 additional entries).

Correction: I am not sure if I'm familiar with: Kees van Dongen - The Corn Poppy (1919)
Orazio Samacchini - Hercules and Antaeus (1565) ... The titles don't immediately ring a bell, but with how many paintings I've observed and/or evaluated, it's possible my memory isn't serving me too. If they're new, they'll be the first to be added to my recommendations to check out.

Thank you for all your insights about Lichtenstein and Rothko! I'll give both of them another go with that in mind. And I'll let you know if I end up agreeing with you on them. You've already convinced me that I probably haven't given them attentive enough consideration, however my 7.3+ list is pretty strict so even if I dig them much more than I did before (which, for Lichtenstein, was mainly "amusing, satirical novelty" and, for Rothko "meditative, interesting choice/combinations of color"), they still have a long shot at making it and that doesn't mean your insights weren't valuable. My Extended list (7/10) would be a pretty big jump for both of them from where I considered them before.

For Cezanne, his most popular are definitely one of his bathers or one of his apple still lifes, but I've always liked Bibemus Quarry (1895), Mont Sainte Victoire seen from Bibemus Quarry, Woods with millstone, Joachim Gasquet, and Man with crossed arms the most.

Everything you said about Klimt is correct, without a doubt. Very well put. Adele Bloch Bauer 1 is fantastic too obviously, but I far prefer The Kiss, which is notably on your list. I'm also quite fond of The Tree of Life and Lake Attersee. He diverted from his typical style and really nailed the outcomes for both.

Curious simply on your inclusion of Philosophy, Medicine & Jurisprudence. How did you analyze it? Is there any detailed account as to how it was coloured or what materials were used? I've only ever seen the b&w photographs. I've never researched to heavily into the pieces.

Corn Poppy (and Kees van Dongen in general) is just a personal inclusion. One of my favourite portrait artists. His landscapes are pretty nice too though, something along the lines of Van Gogh meets Matisse meets Monet.

Hercules and Antaeus was a favourite of an old art professor I had. I had to go dig up my notes to remember what it was called. I was really floored when I saw it for the first time (in picture), it's extremely forward thinking for the time.

For the record, Lichtenstein's work is amusing and satirical, but I would definitely disagree with calling it novelty. There's a lot going for them. Make sure to look a bit into who Lichtenstein was as a person as well. I like to separate the art from the artist, but I find that in this case it adds a bit of insight. And keep in mind that Rothko's work isn't always meditative. Sometimes it's very harsh and unsettling.

But yeah, cool, all good. I don't think I'll ever make a comprehensive list of my favourite paintings, but I'm definitely hoping to see them one day.
