Sorry, Chief! Listen to Man Amplified.

Cool Purple, I wasn’t sure if you cared for folk, I couldn’t find much of it in your charts. Jansch was a huge influence on guys like Drake, Jimmy Page, And Neil Young. I bought a Nick Drake bootleg called A Day Gone By... a few years ago, which includes a few Jansch covers that steered me to his album.

One of my best friends from high school was a huge Pumpkins fan, so I’ve probably heard the entire album one way or another. But, it’s been years and it’s never gotten a proper listen of my own volition.

Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins

I still love the three big hits off this album, and it’s probably because they’ll forever be tied to memories of my childhood. They’re definitely well written, and display an aspiration to art rock that you don’t see often enough. But, the rest of the album...is okay at times and bad at others. “Geek U.S.A.” and “Spaceboy” couldn’t end fast enough. I hate to say the singles are the only standouts, but nothing else really changes my mind. “Soma”, “Silverfuck”, and “Luna” were fine, but not anything I’ll go running back to.

I still have to say I have a deep appreciation for their fusion of styles, I just wish that the songcraft were more consistent.

Wow, I just realized you’ve switched to my chart. It’s a complete mess and needs to be overhauled, but there’s some incredible music there. Listen to The River...I’ve, at times, found myself listening to that for days on end. It’s incredibly beautiful, and incredibly underrated on this site.

From the overall chart:

20. The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths (possibly listened and forgotten)
24. Is This It - The Strokes
35. Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan
37. The Joshua Tree - U2
40. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire
43. (What’s The Story) Morning Glory - Oasis
53. Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen
63. What’s Going On - Marvin Gaye
65. Ágætis Byrjun - Sigur Rós
68. Weezer (The Blue Album) - Weezer

Man-Amplified by Clock DVA

If Kraftwerk went the "cyberpunk dystopia" route, then this is the album that would result. I'm interested to listen to their 80s output, because some of those are rated even better than this one, which I found pretty swell. it's labelled as another EBM album, but I'd say it steers closer to IDM. (Aren't acronyms fun?)

Noisybeast always has great charts https://www.besteveralbums.com/thechart.php?c=45577

Jameth, I'll go with a teenage favorite of mine. The Blue Album.

Hanne Hukkelberg- Rykestrasse 68
Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste of Rain... Why Kneel?
The Conet Project (This is almost 5 hours long, so keep that in mind)
Koenjihyakkei - Viva Koenji!!
Little John - Give The Youth A Try
Astral Matrix- Secret Broadcast
The Ullulators - Beyond The Gates Of Ull
Artificial Brain - Labyrinth Constellation
Hector Zazou- Songs From The Cold Seas
Pieter Nooten & Michael Brook - Sleeps With The Fishes

^^^I listened to Buried Dreams by Clock DVA earlier today when I recommended them. I don’t know much about EBM, but it seems to be dance music for people on downers. Lots of hazy, despairing atmospheres that I...rather enjoyed!

Weezer (The Blue Album) by Weezer

Already knew four tracks. “My Name Is Jonas” is still as annoying as ever. The rest of the album ranges from catchy to very catchy. Overall, it’s fun, but it’s also pretty vapid. The clunky riffage gets tiring, even if it’s occasionally interrupted. The lyrics don’t leave you wrestling with any abstract thoughts. I also can’t help but suspect that this album is partly to blame for the suckage that was late 90s alternative. That’s probably unfair retrospective criticism, but it occurred to me just the same. I also think my opinion of 90s alternative has waned as I’ve moved into my 30s, it just isn’t as compelling at 33 as it was at 17. I’ll easily make exceptions for Grace and Daydream Nation, those two albums are works of art. I need to find more alternative(ish) albums like those...

(2)

I’m gonna dump Viva Koenji!! in your lap, Chief. It’s genuinely strange, so enjoy!

By the way, I keep forgetting to ask what chart you’re using?

Yeah there's some in my 60's charts but not a lot. It's a genre I only really like when it's great (to state the obvious I guess). I'm not into modern folk much (especially the indie folk that was everywhere in the late '00s and early '10s,) but you will find a bit of folk punk in my recent charts.

The River by Ali Farka Touré

I haven't heard a lot of world music but this was rather enjoyable. An emotive voice, great guitar, cool rhythms, and interesting percussion. I started to zone out and drift off a bit for the second half of the album so maybe it's best in small doses for me. 7.5/10 and 27/39 for 1990.

Jameth give Ágætis Byrjun - Sigur Rós a try.

This is one of the few records of this game so far I am somewhat stumped on. I do believe that while the sound of the album is quite grand, pleasant and somewhat enveloping for what I believe is Post Rock, it somewhat leaves me hanging or more importantly, wanting to have more musical details that I could sink my teeth into. I mean I do like this a bit more than the Explosions In The Sky album from this year. But that realistically is more of a pinch higher than be in the top 25 for this year. And I could repeat the usual complaint where the album is shown a longer run time until you realize that a good 60% of the track is silence. If you are going to do that, make it at least 30 seconds. Because it continues to sink in that particular technique is a trope I don't like.

Grade:75 maybe an 80 later on but is a 75.

@Purple

Yeah, newer folk can be hard to digest. I’ve mostly steered clear of it because it’s too often overly sparse, overly dry, and there seems to be too many artists doing the same thing. But I’ve only taken a small sample...

Glad you enjoyed The River...it is pretty long like a lot of albums from the early CD years.

(1)

Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós

The first few tracks were incredible, and I was anticipating the cosmic experience to carry on for the rest of the album, but this never materialized. It meanders for the last 45 minutes, never taking you anywhere new. I appreciate the sound that Sigur Rós were able to distill, but they would have been well served if they took care to extend it to other styles or forms. The album needed a shot of adrenaline or two interspersed throughout...a crescendo, something. Some sort of contrast. Ah well, I suppose. I’ll check out their later albums to see whether they learn to vary the tone.

Luigii, get out of the top 25 and spin Gold.

Safe As Milk by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band

Wow! Compared to Trout Mask Replica this is almost "normal" music Laughing But of course it's Captain Beefheart so it isn't. So naturally I liked the weirder, more experimental tracks, with Electricity the highlight for me. I do prefer TMR, whose highs are higher for me, but this was a really good debut that hints at some of what was to come. 8/10, 16/22 for 1968, and 68/100 for the '60s (TMR is currently at #44 for comparison).

I pretty much agree with your analysis of Ágætis Byrjun Jameth. This time I'm going back to one of my all time favourites - The Queen Is Dead.

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths

Now I remember getting halfway through “Frankly, Mr. Shankly” and throwing my hands up. The rest of the album isn’t as corny as that track, fortunately. “Never Had No One Ever” and “Vicar In A Tutu” were my favorites, which are oddly the two lowest rated tracks on this site. The rest of the album I can more or less live without. There’s a lot of fine songwriting, I just think they have a lame sound. I don’t like the guitar tone, the bass tone, or the timbre of the drums. I don’t know why Johnny Marr cites distortion as a “rock guitar cliché”? I think some of the songs could have used some, “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”, in particular.

(2)

“Electricity” was my introduction to Beefheart and I bought the album on that track alone. “Autumn’s Child” is the masterpiece in my eyes, but that album is loaded end to end.

It feels a little dirty picking from my own chart, but here we are. Listen to What We Did On Our Holidays.

(3)

From the overall chart (three more picks):

24. Is This It - The Strokes
35. Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan

71. Appetite For Destruction - Guns N‘ Roses
73. Thriller - Michael Jackson
76. A Night At The Opera - Queen

Viva Koenji!! by Koenjihyakkei

Tatsuyo Yoshida is the mastermind behind Japanese Experimental/Noise/Zeuhl bands "Ruins" and "Koenjihyakkei". He's an incredible drummer, and a bizarre vocalist. This album takes the aforementioned Zeuhl to a new level with even more outrageous juxtapositions of heavy music mixed with operatic female vocals. It's really a trip, and it's totally worth a listen just for the fun of it. It's hard not to get caught up in Yoshida's captivating madness.

(Listen to if you like Lightning Bolt. Ruins and Koenjihyakkei preceded them and were their influence, I imgaine.)

And here's a Zeuhl chart for your perusal
