After playing this game for a bit a thought has crossed my mind (especially for these "canon" albums, because these are the "accepted" greats - not the fringe/love it or leave it records) that it seems like certain things we allow in music we love and when it's new music we throw it out. I still sometimes have this idea that all music really is the same and somehow we have these prejudices that allow us to like or dislike it, AND these prejudices allow us to have blind spots or "allowances" for some aspects and other aspects fail to win us over. I'm not sure what allows this to be or what makes some artists have a higher level of "allowances" than another.

Like both the U2 lyrics and a paraphrase of my dick is as big as the Eiffel tower (Kendrick), both can be off putting or interesting, pending on mood and receptiveness. There's facts, interpretation of facts and word paradigms that play a role in all of this and I just find the mix of responses intriguing.

Anyway, sorry to mess with the flow, but just wanted to express that realization.

“Canonical” albums have been filtrered by time (i.e. by us all in time), so they’re more likely to have more objective (shared) qualities.
Yet we make no concession with them in this thread! That’s why this game is interesting: to have fresh, sometimes harsh, subvective angle on “approved” albums.

PS : Kendrick verse about the Eiffel tower is objectively weak, sorry

Yeah it is interesting.

Also I think you meant subjectively? Those are all opinions, and therefore not objective.

Not sure how quoting a well known feminist quote vs saying my dick is big aren't subjective arguments. And as I stated it depends on a lot of things on whether you appreciate those lyrics (IE subjective). Objective would mean there is no room for opinion...

oh, no I just meant artistically objective ! So yes, objective, i.e some consensus among listeners/readers, watchers, etc. (but consensus does leave room for opinions !)
So I was just saying that the following verse can't be regarded as good prose:
"I pray my dick get big as the Eiffel Tower
So I can fuck the world for seventy two hours"

I’ve literally never seen anyone argue that that line is good prose. Does anyone consider song lyrics to be prose, for that matter?

It’s a pretty good line in the broader context of the song and album. And there is no way to “objectively” state it is a bad line. Anyway, where did a debate about Backseat Freestyle come from? It’s been many pages since anyone listened to GKMC in this thread and I don’t remember it being mentioned then.

In Rainbows by Radiohead

I've only taken a liking to Radiohead in the past year or so, and I still think they're pretty overrated. But In Rainbows might be their best work. It was instantly my favorite of theirs when I first heard it in January, but then got passed by A Moon Shaped Pool. After a second listen, I think it's back on top. Sonically, it's consistently good, often great, and significantly more interesting than other Radiohead records. The textures, the atmospheres, the execution, and the stylistic variety are all above average. Lyrically, I haven't absorbed it much yet, but at the very least the lyrics never seem to detract from the music. Vocally, Yorke sounds much better than on several other records, including BEA's & RYM's consensus GOAT album. Yeah, it's a great album. And I'm looking forward to listening again later. 4/5.

Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake

The voice, the singing style, and the guitar playing just all go so well together. Not depressing like Pink Moon, and I think I liked this album better than Bryter Later as well. It gets off to a great start with the first three songs, and Cello Song and Fruit Tree are also highlights.

Baystate: This list has a lot of albums I like so from many options I am going with my favourite RHCP album.

Music For 18 Musicians by Steve Reich
This is easily the best thing I've listened to so far on this journey. It reminded me a bit of John Adams' Shaker Loops and a very small amount of Illinois by Sufjan and a little of stuff like Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. 87?

2. Purplepash - enjoy probably their 4th best studio album from my point of view and others see it as a bit higher. For me Stones have rarely been great album makers, but this contains so many fantastic individual tracks. So many other good choices on your list... EDIT: Ironically BEA ranks it 4ths as well, but my top 4 are as follows:
Some Girls
Exile On Main St.
Sticky Fingers
These two actually technically tie for 4th:
Beggars Banquet
Let It Bleed

Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones

142. My Favorite Things by John Coltrane (1961)
146. Symbolic by Death (1995)

183. Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich (1978)
189. The Infamous by Mobb Deep (1995)
198. ATLiens by OutKast (1996) - Gone done listened before but didn't rate on RYM... best be doin so)
201. Kyuss by Kyuss (1994) - Gone done listened before but didn't rate on RYM... best be doin so)

Blood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chili Peppers

First of all, this album is incredibly bloated. It's almost 74 minutes, including a lot of inessential tracks, so it could have and should have been cut by half an hour. Musically, it's solid and much better than I was expecting. It's a travesty that it's ranked above every single actual funk album though - wtf BEA! Lyrically, it ranges from solid to terrible, and the rapping in particular is awful. So while it's fairly good overall, there are glaring flaws. 3/5.

2. Seth, listen to this again:

ATLiens by OutKast

Tracy Chapman by Tracy Chapman

I can't say that the album is bad, because it's not. But the second I start liking adult contemporary music is the second that I become an old, sad, and boring grown up. I don't want to do that. "Mountains' O Things" was kind of fun with the cheesy pipe organ and 80s pseudo-african sounds. "For My Lover" wasn't bad either, but "Fast Car" is just one of the earwormy songs that kind drive you nuts.

No Money Store? Get on it.

August and Everything After- Counting Crows
Metropolis Pt. 2- Dream theater
Sam's Town- The Killers
Hot Fuss- The Killers
Up The Bracket- The Libertines
Everything Must Go- Manic Street Preachers

Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones

I do like The Rolling Stones but I'm yet to hear an album of theirs that I really like a lot. There is usually one to three great songs and the rest is just take it or leave it filler. I don't recall hearing an album track from a Stones album that I hadn't heard before as a single or whatever and thought now that is a great song! This album was the same but with only one great song - Sympathy For The Devil - but still a few decent songs (Stray Cat Strut, Jigsaw Puzzle, Salt of the Earth), and nothing bad, so still a good decent album. Sticky Fingers is probably their best album that I've heard so far.

Rocka give The Libertines a try. I haven't heard the album myself but I liked their self titled follow up.

Up The Bracket by The Libertines

My list (BEA best of the 60's)

23. Odessey And Oracle - The Zombies
25. Black Saint And The Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus
28. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan
29. The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society - The Kinks

38. The Beatles - A Hard Days Night
39. Neil Young And Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

The Money Store by Death Grips

Part of the reason I've always been skeptical about Death Grips is the fan base. It's more or less rap for hipster white boys, a lot of whom regard it as a pinnacle of the genre without really exploring, and some of whom don't like other rap at all. But I'm willing to set that aside and try to judge the music on its merits, as I did with their 2018 record a few months ago. And I'd be lying if I said there weren't significant merits. Both the production and rapping are talented and interesting. However, the album just doesn't sound good to me, and that's a deal-breaker. I frequently like abrasive music, but here I don't feel that the abrasion comes with a payoff (at least for me), making it a slog to get through the record. There are several tracks that I like more than I dislike, but as a whole album I dislike it more than I like it. I respect this album, but I don't enjoy it. 2.5/5.
