Personally, I think the bigger problem is the way you're separating men and women in this regard. Acting is acting, and even though women definitely deserve much more representation, they shouldn't be called "actresses" just because of their gender. They're doing the same job the guys are doing, and should be ranked accordingly.

It’s hard to say if they deserve much more representation, considering we’ve been separating their categories so far in this thread/poll and, thus, have no idea how men and women are represented thus far.
Would you prefer we rank top 50 or 100 thespians, irrespective of gender? _________________ -Ryan

@badseed, I'm not sure if there's much more to be said here, but there's a difference between being sexually attracted to actresses and sexualizing actresses. Nobody is criticizing you for the former. If I were an actress reading your posts, I certainly wouldn't have a very high opinion of you right now.
I should also add that your comparison between physical attractiveness vs. cinematography, special effects, etc. is a terrible argument. You're comparing examples of good craft to your own choice not to make craft the priority in your rankings. When I read the thread title, I assumed it meant "people that are the best at acting", rather than "people that are actors ranked according to non-acting criteria".

Combining actors and actresses onto one list risks the men dominating it. Separating them into two lists of 50 each guarantees equal representation.
By the way, your list as it stands right now, which combines actors and actresses, has more men on it than women. So which users are giving women more representation, you or the users who split them into two separate lists?

Good point.

But that isn't true. badseed never said attractiveness was his "priority" in his rankings. He said it played a part, but his list was still about the acting:

Having looked at badseed's list, it appears to be a list of very talented, highly regarded actresses.
@badseed, your "smash" comment was definitely sleazy. I'm not trying to change your perspective. If looks, sex appeal, whatever you want to call it, plays a part in ranking your favorite actresses, that's your business. Doesn't bother me. But like Gowi said, be aware of why the comment would rub some people the wrong way and incite backlash. You could have still made the comment but phrased it better, and probably prevented this from blowing up.
But anyway...
I'm ready to move on if everyone else is.

If it played a part, that means there are actresses ranked lower than others or not on the list because of their looks. But this is just wording I guess.
Happy to move on, just wanted to give my two cents worth.

Just because you live your life like a hypersensitive douchy barista doesn't mean everyone else does, nor does it mean I should hide the way I feel in order to please the mighty music lovers of BEA. Be offended if you want and fine. It doesn't bother me one bit. But your thoughts regarding the subject are just as much nonsense to me as what I'm saying is to you. Now can we please stop crying and move on with our lives? |
Is it any mystery why women are so underrepresented on music sites like BEA? The boys club atmosphere hurts us all by alienating a lot of people who would have valuable things to add to the community. _________________ Add me on RYM

If my memory serves me correctly it is exactly why female members have left the site (or at least the forums), too. It really is no surprise, sadly.
