Honestly, I'm considering to come back to this with a different list. Maybe. Might tackle Melon's top 100 list for the 2010's.

Clube Da Esquina by Milton Nascimento / Lô Borges

So I had actually heard this before. I listened to it sometime last fall, and I didn't enjoy it at all. I had expected to like it at least a little bit because of how highly acclaimed it is, so I figured that this wasn't an album that should be listened to when there's snow on the ground and decided to give it another chance when it got warmer. Well, it hasn't gotten warmer, but it's at least sunny today. Unfortunately, I didn't like it much more this time around.

I've listened to a few MPB albums now and the only one I've been able to get into is Jorge Ben's Africa Brasil, which I like more due to the strong funk influence. The other MPB album's I've heard don't feel as exciting or inviting. This one is better than some I heard, but a lot of the songs seemed to go by without really evolving much. There were a couple songs that really caught my ear, especially Clube Da Esquina Nº 2, but overall it didn't really draw me in.

I hate to say it, but I think one of the reasons might be that I don't speak Portuguese. There's definitely music in languages I don't understand that I love, so I don't mean to write off all non-English music. But I read a review of one of Jorge Ben's albums that talked about how beautiful the language of one of his stories was and I realized I had missed a lot of what people like about the album. There are definitely artists I like, from Bob Dylan to Sun Kil Moon, that I wouldn't think much of if I didn't understand the words because their storytelling is such a big part of their music. Maybe that's the case here? Again, if the music hits me hard enough I don't care - I don't know what any of the songs on Africa Brasil are about. But I think this one is just at the quality where more lyrical engagement or understanding could have pushed it over the top for me.

I think I'll give it one more try in the summer when it's actually warm out.

I was torn between picking this or Pop off your list Jameth, but I think I like this one a bit more.

Basictonalvocabulary by Surgeon

Some short and hard-hitting techno tracks that don't overstay their welcome. Very repetitive, but they would work well on their own in a club setting.

There's no way Humbug should be rated this high, but it was still when Arctic Monkeys could make a semi-creative rock tune.

Cloud Nine by The Temptations

I'm a sucker for soul/funk music like this even if it isn't good... hehe. This however is pretty good. It didn't overcome my favorites, but comfortably could start getting some rotation in the near future. Temptations for me were totally more the typical Motown sound, so this was pretty damn cool to hear them jam this way/mature sound. Really dig how consistently solid it is throughout (only a small dip) or that near 10 minute jam was pretty amazing. I heard it through the grapevine might be my favorite tune/song/lyrics of any song ever, even if this rendition could never top Marvin's or even Gladys' or CCR's, but solid/in the running nonetheless. 3.7/83ish... could be a 4/85 with more plays or could drop.

2. Witthüser & Westrupp ‎– Trips Und Träume - sounds like a dreamy/trippy affair, and if it lives up to it's name, I imagine it's pretty good. I'm a sucker for German stuff.

Trips Und Traume by Witthuser & Westrupp

Judging by this album cover of some man's face breaking off of his face, I thought I was going to get some Heavy-Psych freakout, but instead I got a mostly acoustic and jammy album with some medieval flourishes. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't anything too engaging.

Alright next one is Caetano Veloso.

Freetown Sound by Blood Orange
It's very incosistent and the skits, interludes and intro/outro parts weren't nearly as entertaining and clever as they should've been. Or maybe it's just me not being in the mood the last few days. Tried listening to it twice, and it always fell a bit short. Don't get me wrong, it's still a very good, innovative and very well produced album (well, maybe a bit too compressed). It also has a few highlights like the excellent Hadron Collider, and a great Carly Rae Jepsen feature on Better Than Me. Augustine and that whole ending of the album were pretty good too. It's too long though, and the atmosphere it creates doesn't compensate for that. A bit like King Krule's OOZ, it gives off a cool vibe, but it's all over the place. At least on the first few listens. And OOZ was much better overall though. Freetown Sound is a solid 7/10

Some solid stuff (and some not so solid), but Benji seems like a good pick. Think you'll like it luigi

Well you were right on Benji LedZep. I did enjoyed it. A lot actually. Rating wise it would be a 90. The reason for this is due to several things. For one I actually looked at the lyrics while listening to the album and there was a lot of stuff through out the album that made me care. From the sentiments of both songs that were addressed to his mom and dad. To how a lot of people pass away throughout his life due to crazy coincidences, the sorrow of guilt or just natural causes. Wanting to thank the person who gave him a shot in his music career. And plenty of other things that while to some could be somewhat padding, I'd argue paints a more vivid picture and gets quite fun when Mark can still ricochet from topic to topic while I can keep interest throughout the run time.

The other thing I would mention is that the music was also really good. I would add a bit of a caveat that the somber tone of the beginning while thematically fits and becomes a gut punch, I'd argue are a bit plain. But as the album goes on, musically it just gets better and better. I have to give a round of applause to the final track because I was not expecting a jazz folk hybrid at the end. And that was pure gold. But I also want to give shout outs to both tracks 8 and 9 where those closers to those songs were really good. I prefer the somewhat ambient vibe of the end of track 8 but when track 9 delivers that drum groove, oh man that was good.

Now if I will go into a few caveats I had with this would be how the way Mark has these multi vocals that dart around on track 9 and the final track while sounded cool kinda took me out of it. Had a shell shock quality to it that makes me feel like it is a double edge sword quirk within the record. And while there were definitely a lot of sad moments within this record, I thought this was gonna make me cry to the max. And while I got quite teary eyed, I'd argue records throughout the 2010's did that better due to the subject matter or the sound. And that latter especially since that album I'm referring to might give me a panic attack. Otherwise this was worth the listen and I hope I retain the feeling for this album. Maybe even blooming to a 95 or a 100. If I was making a 2014 list, I don't know where I would put it. Top 30? But I'll see whenever I get to that.

(2)
LedZep, listen to Looping State of Mind. Even though I'd argue Infinite Moment was way better.

Caetano Veloso (1968) by Caetano Veloso

Just like this cover, it is surrounded by potential, but then is just ruined by the photo/his vocals. Arrangements/instrumentation is actually pretty interesting most of the time. But sometimes too much pepper in the sausage makes for kraut faces. 3/70.

2. That's a pretty decent list starting out that 2010s... minus Fleet Foxes - I think they are garbage. Anyway, I think you'd probably like Tyler The Creator-Igor the most, so go for that.
