whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

I just listened to this for the first time yesterday... now this is album of the day

This is, ... what...., the fourth time this happens.
//// that aside, this is one of the greatest punk releases I've ever heard, definitely in my top 10. PRN is right!

It's a damn shame what the DC punk scene did to Bad Brains at the beginning of their career. All because they were reinventing punk (while being black). Now they're basically revered among DC punk.

Great album, in my regular rotation and much more so than any other punk album I think

I'd feel really bad for them if they weren't a bunch of homophobes. This album rocks though.

Really? That's shitty, I had no idea. Especially shitty/ironic since Bad Brains' frontman calls goes by the stage name "Human Rights"...

EDIT: while maybe I don't feel that bad for Bad Brains, if they were "banned" for their homophobia, that would make me feel a lot better about the DC punk scene. But the unofficial "ban" was definitely because they are black and integrated reggae into their punk music. I do think this says a lot about the DC Punk scene's issues with exclusivity. Punk is not just for straight white men.

Brilliant album. Insanely intense and yet, no matter how many times, I hear this album those sudden whiplash changes to reggae always blow my mind. Minor Threat are the greatest band to come out of that DC scene, but Bad Brains ain’t far off and offer an entirely unique side to the maelstrom.

H.R. was the only one with significant homophobic views and its a lot more complicated than "lol gays suck". You only really hear it in a few songs as well (such as the infamous "Don't Blow Bubbles"). It is intellectually disingenuous and wrong to justify labeling the whole band as homophobes.

Yup I agree, that was a "band bad" take. I probably should've gone into more detail. But if you're in a band whose singer/lyricist has homophobic tendencies, does that make you a homophobe? Not really, but you're an apologist which is not a whole lot better. See Deathspell Omega.
